SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

In an international study of 2,000 people, psychologists found a clear pattern: when we think about karma in our own lives, we remember the good stuff. About 60% of people recalled rewards after doing good deeds. But when it comes to others, a whopping 92% focused on their “cosmic comeuppance”. That bias shows up everywhere, but is strongest in Western cultures like the U.S., where 71% described personal karma as a pat on the back. In contrast, those from India and Singapore—where karma runs deep — showed a more balanced view. Still, isn’t it great to have the feeling that karma’s got your back?

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

For the first time ever, YouTube will be broadcasting an NFL game internationally — for free. In the first Week 1 game of the season, the Los Angeles Chargers will play the KC Chiefs at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, kicking off the 2025 International Games on Sept. 5. It will be available to watch in its entirety across YouTube and YouTube TV. This is major news as live sports become more and more enmeshed with streaming.

Alison Brie and Dave Franco have been hit with a copyright infringement suit over “Together,” their independent horror film that sold for a reported $17 million after a bidding war at Sundance. A suit alleges that the film is a “blatant rip-off” of “Better Half,” an independent film from 2023. It claims that Brie and Franco’s movie steals the idea of a couple who find themselves physically fused together, as well as numerous other plot and thematic elements, including a “near verbatim” reference to Plato’s Symposium. According to the suit, they were pitched Better Half in 2020, but turned it down.

Adam Sandler took a moment to share a meaningful—and hilarious—goodbye to an iconic figure, paying tribute to Morris the alligator who starred in “Happy Gilmore”. Morris recently died at the Colorado Gator Farm. Sandler shared a still from the film on Instagram, and wrote: “Goodbye, Morris. We are all gonna miss you. You could be hard on directors, make-up artists, costumers – really anyone with arms or legs – but I know you did it for the ultimate good of the film.” He went on for several more sentences in similar style. DID YA KNOW!?

Your brain is constantly eating itself. This process is called phagocytosis, where cells envelop and consume smaller cells or molecules to remove them from the system. Don’t worry! Phagocytosis isn't harmful, but actually helps preserve your grey matter.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 10% of adults have a photo of themselves on their phone’s lock screen.

A study found that 24% of people say they are awesome at ‘small-talk’.

According to recent research, grabbing a handful of walnuts with breakfast might sharpen your thinking. But don’t expect an immediate memory boost. Scientists at the University of Reading did find that eating walnuts in the morning led to faster reaction times on complex thinking tasks throughout the day. Memory benefits, however, only appeared 6 hours after consumption.

WEIRD NEWS

It’s the latest hair trend, twisted as it may be. Daring fashionistas are paying big bucks for “braided hair neckties” after the luxe label Schiaparelli unveiled the avant-garde idea in Paris last year. For a “reasonable” $2,300, you can have a collection of nylon hair looped together into a pigtail, to string around your neck and under the collar like a shoestring tie, in a tip of the hat to the current cowboy aesthetic. Both Selma Blair and Maggie Gyllenhaal have turned heads in a similar look recently. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4pvn3xv2

THE LIST

GOOD-LUCK CHARMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: (Day 1 of 2)

You know that the 4-leaf clover is famous for giving the “luck of the Irish”, Here are some more from other corners of the world…

✓ Rabbit’s foot (worldwide): Some cultures believed rabbits were really shapeshifting witches, so a rabbit’s foot actually equaled a dead witch’s foot, hence good luck.

✓ Dreamcatcher: A symbol of good luck among native communities in North America, it is believed to filter out nightmares so that only positive dreams are remembered.

✓ Acorn: According to English legend, the “fruit of the oak” can protect the health of those who find one, and carry it in a pocket.

✓ Scarab: Scarabs are beetles known for rolling dung across the ground(!) Ancient Egyptians associated the beetle with their god Ra, and believed the scarab beetle brought good health and eternal life.

✓ Anything red: In China, red has long represented strength and protection. Legend has it that a demon named Sui ate children and livestock during the Lunar New Year. There were 2 things the mythical beast hated: loud noises and the color red.

✓ Elephant: In many Asian cultures, the elephant is a symbol of good fortune, because Ganesh, the Hindu god of wisdom and luck, is depicted as having an elephant’s head.

✓ Grapes: In Spain, it is customary to eat 12 of them on New Year’s at the stroke of midnight, to bring good fortune and abundance.

✓ Horseshoes: They’ve been a symbol of good fortune for centuries. The good-luck claims became popular in the US when some began hanging them over doorways, to generate protection and good luck.

And by the way, the 4-leaf clover supposedly protects from dangerous fairies, bad luck and evil spirits. The chances of pulling one from the patch is around 1 in 10,000.
