SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Gen Z parents are ready to tuck bedtime stories in for good. According to a new study, cozying up under the covers with “Snow White” or a nursery rhyme just isn’t as important these days to moms and dads in their early 20s. For nearly 1 in 3 of these Zoomers, reading aloud feels more like homework than a peaceful way for their kids to drift off to sleep. And with phones, tablets, and streaming at their fingertips, who needs fairy tales, right? Just 40% of all parents — Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z — said that reading aloud is actually fun. That’s thanks to busy schedules and piles of homework. In fact, fewer than half of toddlers are read to regularly, and boys especially are missing out. But, here’s the problem: Kids who are read to often are happier, more active, and way more likely to enjoy reading on their own. So maybe it’s time to dust off those bedtime books — because studies show that their ‘happily ever after’ could depend on it.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“American Love Story” has found its ‘Jackie Kennedy’ in Naomi Watts. Meanwhile, newcomer Paul Kelly will play ‘John F. Kennedy Jr.’ in the upcoming FX anthology series from Ryan Murphy. The latest spinoff in the “American Story” universe, “American Love Story” has been described as “a scripted anthology series of sweeping true love stories that captured the world’s attention.” Its first season will portray the whirlwind courtship and marriage of JFK Jr.

Nickelodeon has announced the nominees for the 2025 Kids’ Choice Awards. Leading the pack with 4 noms each are Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and Selena Gomez. They’re followed by Jack Black, Dwayne Johnson, and Jelly Roll, with 3 each. First-time nominees include Gracie Abrams, Zach Bryan, Cynthia Erivo, Doechii, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, Shohei Ohtani, and Florence Pugh. Tyla will host the Kids’ Choice Awards, airing live on June 21.

Former “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron is back to hosting dancing — but now with sharks. He’ll be hosting “Dancing With Sharks”. You heard that right. The “DWS” special will feature prominently in the Discovery Channel’s upcoming annual “Shark Week 2025.” Bergeron’s show will feature “the ultimate underwater thrill…an unprecedented dance competition between expert divers and their shark partners,” according to a release. Just like “DWTS,” there will be professional choreography. But with DWS, that training will come from a “world-class underwater choreographer.”

DID YA KNOW!?

The largest piece of fossilised dinosaur poo discovered is over 30cm long and over two litres in volume. Believed to be a Tyrannosaurus rex turd, the fossilised dung (also named a 'coprolite') is helping scientists better understand what the dinosaur ate.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 25% of people admit they are so impatient that they’ve read the last page of a book long before they should have.

A study found that 90% of jackpot lottery winners gain weight.

If you’ve ever found yourself lightly tapping your foot to the subtle smooth-jazz music piped into your fav restaurant, spare a moment for the unfortunate staff who have to listen to that stuff ALL DAY LONG…EVERY DAY. A recent study looked into the “mismatch” between music that employees need to hear, and the background tunes that are actually played in stores, restaurants, and cafés. Researchers from Ohio State, University of Illinois Chicago, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University coined the term “workplace music misfit” to describe the problem. What problem? Well, of course background music is programmed with the customer in mind, as a subtle way of encouraging them to spend more money (surprise, surprise!). But workers might require a different style of music in order to be as productive as possible. Results show that when employees can’t hear what they need, 2 things happen: their positive emotions drop — and they experience more mental fatigue. These changes can affect how they behave toward their workplace. They’re less likely to go above and beyond, and more likely to slack off or break minor rules. The researchers suggest that some simple fixes, like letting staff help choose music or creating quiet zones, can make a big difference.

WEIRD NEWS

A London-based startup claims it has developed the world’s first self-cooling aluminum beverage can. Weird, but here’s how it works: When a “power button” on the bottom of the can is pressed, a cooling mechanism is activated, dropping the temperature from around 71°F (22°C) to 42°F (6°C) within 10 minutes. And to tell you when it’s ready, the Cool Can features a snowflake mark that turns from white to blue. Think about this — rather than waiting for what feels like FOREVER for a cold beer or other drink when you really want one… like after cutting the grass, at a picnic, or simply after a tough day at work, the “Cool Can” has got you. Apparently, the idea isn’t new, but this company, DeltaH, claims to have finally nailed the tech where others couldn’t. The can is fully recyclable, and the idea is that just one of these special cans would be provided per case, in order to keep costs down.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

GOOD-LUCK CHARMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: (Day of 2)

You know that the 4-leaf clover is famous for giving the “luck of the Irish”, Here are some more from other corners of the world…

✓ Rabbit’s foot (worldwide): Some cultures believed rabbits were really shapeshifting witches, so a rabbit’s foot actually equaled a dead witch’s foot, hence good luck.

✓ Dreamcatcher: A symbol of good luck among native communities in North America, it is believed to filter out nightmares so that only positive dreams are remembered.

✓ Acorn: According to English legend, the “fruit of the oak” can protect the health of those who find one, and carry it in a pocket.

✓ Scarab: Scarabs are beetles known for rolling dung across the ground(!) Ancient Egyptians associated the beetle with their god Ra, and believed the scarab beetle brought good health and eternal life.

✓ Anything red: In China, red has long represented strength and protection. Legend has it that a demon named Sui ate children and livestock during the Lunar New Year. There were 2 things the mythical beast hated: loud noises and the color red.

✓ Elephant: In many Asian cultures, the elephant is a symbol of good fortune, because Ganesh, the Hindu god of wisdom and luck, is depicted as having an elephant’s head.

✓ Grapes: In Spain, it is customary to eat 12 of them on New Year’s at the stroke of midnight, to bring good fortune and abundance.

✓ Horseshoes: They’ve been a symbol of good fortune for centuries. The good-luck claims became popular in the US when some began hanging them over doorways, to generate protection and good luck.

And by the way, the 4-leaf clover supposedly protects from dangerous fairies, bad luck and evil spirits. The chances of pulling one from the patch is around 1 in 10,000.
