SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Consistent screen use has been linked to a greatly increased the risk of neck pain, according to a new review published in the journal BMC Public Health. Study authors looked at data from 25 studies, involving more than 43,000 participants from 13 countries. They found that sedentary behavior, including screen-based behavior such as using mobile phones, computers or watching TV for 6 hours per day or more, was closely associated with participants’ complaints of neck pain. Using mobile phones was found to be the riskiest screen-based activity, increasing the likelihood of neck pain by 82%.

The “Dora the Explorer” franchise is expanding with a new live-action movie, and now we know its release date. “Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado” is a new feature-length live-action movie that will premiere July 2 — but unlike 2019’s “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” this one is going directly to Paramount+ — and Nickelodeon. The new movie is part of Nickelodeon’s 25th anniversary celebration of the Dora the Explorer franchise, which also includes an hourlong special and a new season of the CG-animated preschool series “Dora”, also premiering on July 2.
Who needs another Oscar nomination when you can get an honorary Palme d’Or? Screen legend Denzel Washington received the surprise career achievement badge from Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux for his contributions to cinema, currently showcased by his starring role in Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest.” Honorary awards are not unheard of — Robert De Niro received an expected one at the top of this year’s festival, and Frémaux similarly bestowed one upon Tom Cruise in 2022, the last time the distinction was given under wraps.
The glory days of music videos in the 1990s – when an MTV hot could change a band’s career – will be the subject of a new scripted drama series. “Glitter Fades” explores the “raw glamour, identity crises, and chaotic reinvention behind the scenes of the 1990s music video boom”. It is set in the “fast-paced, ego-fueled world where some of the most iconic images of pop culture were made – and where many identities were broken and reborn”. Jonas Akerlund, who worked on videos for Britney Spears and Sheryl Crow, is to direct the pilot and exec produce.

OF THE DAY
A study found that 30% of adults say they don’t drink water after 3pm.
While it’s been said that manners maketh a man, it turns out they also maketh AI a lot less environmentally friendly. According to OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, when we use polite terms like “please” and “thank you” when communicating with ChatGPT, it is forced to perform extra computations before coming up with a response. Factor in ChatGPT’s billion queries per day, spread across its 350 million weekly active users, and you can see there’s a lot of excess energy and expenditure seemingly going to waste. In addition, Altman says the monetary figure of that extra processing could stretch as far as “Tens of millions of dollars.” On the other hand, more than one report has concluded that being kind to ChatGPT and other bots may result in better – and more polite responses.

WEIRD NEWS
Chinese tech giant Baidu has filed patent for a new AI system that it claims it can decode animal sounds — even your cat’s meows and your dog’s barks. Their goal is to finally crack the code of interspecies communication – bringing us closer to our furry friends than ever before. While the project is still in the research phase, Baidu says the system could lead to “deeper emotional communication” with animals. Other groups are also racing to translate the language of dolphins, elephants, and even whales — and last year, researchers claimed they “conversed” with a humpback whale in Alaska.

THE LIST
2025 SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS:
Summer blockbuster season will officially begin with this Friday’s release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”. Here are the 10 movies coming to theaters this summer that are vying to be “THE” blockbuster of the year, à la “Jaws” or “E.T.” or “Independence Day”, etc…
✪ “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” (May 23): It will follow on from the evil A.I./missing submarine storyline introduced in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”. The title seems to suggest that this will be the final Mission: Impossible film (or at least the last one featuring Tom Cruise as ‘Ethan Hunt’…)
✪ “28 Years Later” (June 20): The third installment takes place 28 years after the Rage Virus escaped a research lab, where survivors have found ways to exist amidst the infected. When a father and his son leave the island on a mission, they discover secrets, wonders, and horrors of the outside world.
✪ “F1” (June 27): Brad Pitt plays a washed-up Formula One driver coming out of retirement to mentor an up-and-coming rookie. “Top Gun: Maverick’s” Joseph Kosinski directs.
✪ “Jurassic World Rebirth (July 2): Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali lead the cast, and “Godzilla’s” Gareth Edwards is in the director’s chair. Original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp handled the script.
✪ “Superman” (July 11): This reboot of the franchise was written and directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Rather than rehashing the character’s familiar origin story, it sees ‘Clark Kent’ trying to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive upbringing in Smallville, Kansas.
✪ “The Smurfs Movie (July 18): Rihanna leads a star-studded voice cast in the role of ‘Smurfette’. She also produced the film – and recorded the songs. “Puss in Boots” director Chris Miller and “South Park” writer Pam Brady are also aboard.
✪ “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (July 25): Set in a retro-futuristic, ‘60s-inspired world, it sees the superhero team struggling to defend Earth from ‘Galactus’ and his herald, the ‘Silver Surfer’. It stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
✪ “The Naked Gun” (Aug. 1): In this reboot, Liam Neeson takes over the starring role from Leslie Nielsen as ‘Frank Drebin, Jr.’ (presumably the son of the original ‘Frank Drebin’). Pamela Anderson plays his love interest. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but, really, we’ll only be there for the farcical elements.
✪ “Freakier Friday” (Aug. 8): More than 20 years after the original, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis have reunited for a “Freaky Friday” sequel. We’ll see ‘Anna Coleman’, now a mother herself, once again switching bodies with her mother, ‘Tess’.
✪ “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (July 18): A group of friends is terrorized by a stalker who knows about a gruesome incident from their past. This sequel comes 27 years after the second installment in the trilogy “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer”, featuring some characters from the original films.
