SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If you’re not a fan of working out, but would like to take advantage of some of the benefits, try doing your everyday chores and activities more quickly. In a new study published in Circulation, researchers analyzed the daily movements of more than 20,000 adults. None formally exercised. But some moved with more zip than others as they went about their lives, taking the stairs instead of the escalator, for instance, or speed vacuuming their living room. It was found that these everyday exertions, often amounting to less than 5 minutes per day, made otherwise sedentary adults as much as half as likely to experience a heart attack or stroke in the following years, compared to those who dawdled through their days.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Nicole Kidman will be celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival, where she’ll receive the Woman in Motion Award. Launched in 2015 by Kering, an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival, the Women in Motion program highlights the creativity and contribution made by women, both on and off screen, in the world of culture and the arts. Previous winners include NBCUniversal Studio Group chair and CEO Donna Langley, Jane Fonda, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon.

Christie Brinkley was reluctant to mention ex-husband Billy Joel’s snacking blackout in her new memoir. The model recalled in “Uptown Girl”, which was released yesterday, that the singer once drunkenly ate spaghetti from a pan on the stove, before accusing his family of eating his pasta — and kicking them out of the house. She told the LA Times: “I hesitated to put that scene in the book. But at the same time, it demonstrates what I was up against.” Brinkley said she “was 100% dedicated to Billy”, but never told anyone about their issues, including her friends. Why? She told the paper: “We had a child together, and I was trying to protect the family.”

DID YA KNOW!?

Did you know the first item sold on eBay was a broken laser pointer? It’s a truth universally acknowledged that you should be careful when you shop online. Thankfully, Mark Fraser was apparently fully aware that he was getting a broken laser pointer when he bought it for $14.83 from Pierre Omidyar, eBay’s founder, in 1995

JOKE OF THE DAY

(FROM HEIDI)
SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study finds that some people may be genetically programmed to be vegetarians.

There are those who dread the loud noise and attention-bringing effect of letting loose with a hearty sneeze. And there are those who relish nothing more than the relief provided by unleashing a giant dad-sneeze that could wake the dead (or your spouse). This is not directed at that last group. But believe it or not, there are “things we can do to decrease the volume of the sneeze,” according to Jay F. Piccirillo, professor of otolaryngology (whatever that is…) at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. But, he cautions, you’ll have to think about it ahead of time. Here’s what to do:

Exhale: Even though a sneeze can seemingly come out of nowhere, if you have a chance, exhale before the moment of truth. This will release some of the pressure in the lungs.

Relax your vocal cords: Imagine you’re letting out a deep sigh. The pronounced “ooo” at the end of “achoo” is due to vibrating vocal cords and an open mouth.

Keep your mouth closed: Hold your tongue to the roof of your mouth to direct air pressure through your nose, rather than your mouth.

Do the “Dracula” when you reach the point of no return: Cover your mouth with your elbow. If that’s not possible, at least sneeze into a handkerchief to muffle the blast.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

If you have a favorite quote.... you can send it to us at the bottom of the page at JohnAndHeidiShow.com

“People waste their time pondering whether a glass is half empty or half full. Me, I just drink whatever’s in the glass.” — Sophia Petrillo, “The Golden Girls”

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ In feudal Japan, lords purposely built homes with squeaky floors as a defensive measure against ninjas.

✓ Oklahoma’s official state vegetable is the watermelon…which is a fruit.

✓ Post-it notes should be peeled horizontally, not in an upward motion, which causes the paper to curl.

✓ ‘Jim’ pranked ‘Dwight’ 114 times throughout the entirety of the U.S. version of “The Office.”

A study showed that being called ‘Baby’ has a positive effect on the female brain, causing instant emotional stress relief.

WEIRD NEWS

A Utah woman was arrested and accused of leading police on a high-speed chase — then calling for roadside assistance after officers spiked her tire. 45-year-old Annamae Martinez was allegedly spotted driving down I-70 at a blazing 120 mph. When a trooper tried to stop her, she hit the gas again. After a 100-mile pursuit and 2 tire spike attempts, her car finally popped a tire near Sigurd. But the drama was just getting started. Despite troopers shouting through a PA system, she refused to exit the vehicle. Then, in a plot twist no one saw coming, she called AAA — yes, roadside assistance — while still in a police standoff. But AAA patched her through to police, who patched her through to reality. She finally surrendered and was booked for reckless driving and fleeing.
