SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

We don’t call them “man’s best friend” for nothing. But it turns out they can be best friends with pretty much anyone. A new research study found that dogs outrank most human relationships when it comes to satisfaction and support. Dog owners reported higher emotional fulfillment, greater companionship, and fewer conflicts with their pooches than with relatives, partners, or friends. Only the bond between parents and their children saw comparable benefits. The Hungarian researchers found that like a parent-child relationship, the dog-owner bond combines strong affection and nurturing with minimal conflict, and doesn’t include the emotional baggage often found between humans. They also determined that people don’t necessarily use doggos to replace human relationships, but to complement them. People with strong human connections also tend to have strong bonds with their dogs, suggesting our canine companions enhance, rather than provide a substitute for our social lives.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” easily topped the weekend box office, with a projected domestic haul for the ensemble action piece, which follows a ragtag team-up of Marvel’s least superpowered personalities, of $70-75 million. The supernatural vampire pic “Sinners” fell to second place, but still managed a weekend gross of about $34 million, while Alec Baldwin’s controversy-laced “Rust” finally opened in select theaters while also being available on premium VOD – but the Western chalked up an estimated Friday opening gross of just $25,000 from 115 theaters

Warner Bros. is leaning into “Minecraft Movie” mayhem by announcing “Block Party Edition” screenings, which encourage the audience to sing and talk along with the hit film. As the video game adaptation starring Jack Black enters its second month in theaters, it is hoped the screening stunt will spark another round of repeat viewing this weekend. Block Party Edition screenings will be held on Friday in North America and select international markets.

DID YA KNOW!?

Traditionally, those who made a New Year’s resolution involving dieting are falling off the wagon right about now. That’s if they made it through the first few days, of course. And according to a survey, the number one diet enemy could be the person who is SUPPOSED to have your best interests at heart: Your better half. 24% said their partner enjoys yummy snacks and treats right in front of them, plus they order take-out food or encourage them to have drinks. Other top reasons people said their diets fail include: lack of time to plan meals, goodies offered at social gatherings, and eating for emotional or stress-related reasons.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Microsoft just turned 50.

The most expensive cup of coffee in the US is found at Klatch Coffee in San Francisco. They sell Elida Geisha 803 coffee for $75 per cup. Inside the cup, you’ll find delicate floral notes and a hint of a subtle brew.

People are relying so much on AI-generated content these days that a new study found we’re more willing to rely on legal advice provided by ChatGPT than by real lawyers – at least when they don’t know which of the 2 provided the advice. When the source of the advice was known, people were still just as likely to accept the legal advice from AI as they were from a bona fide lawyer. The researchers said that one of the risks with accepting legal advice from a computer is that AI sometimes creates so-called “hallucinations” – or outputs containing inaccurate or nonsensical content.

WEIRD NEWS

If case you didn’t catch it when news broke late last week, a Brazilian nun who was named the world’s oldest person early this year has died. The agency LongeviQuest, which tracks the world’s longest-living people, said that Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas died on April 30, at the age of 116, just one month shy of her 117th birthday. She died in Brazil. According to Guinness, she is second-oldest nun in history, after France’s Lucile Randon (Sister AndrĂ©). That sister died at age 118. Now, 115-year-old Brit Ethel Caterham is officially listed as the world’s oldest living person.
