SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Apparently, romance comes with a pretty large price tag. A recent report from BMO’s Real Financial Progress Index reveals that the price of a typical date in Canada costs around $173, and with couples averaging 10-21 dates before committing, suitors are looking at spending $3,621 — just to start a relationship. Other findings from the study:
• 38% of people feel that dating costs have actually affected their long-term financial plans.
• 60% are not willing to spend money on dating apps or professional match making services.
• Single men are 20% more likely to feel pressured to plan expensive dates than single women.
• Nearly a third (30%) of single Canadians have canceled a date to save money.
• 41% have left a date thinking it was a complete waste of both time and cash.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Lionsgate and DirecTV are teaming up on the launch of the Lionsgate Collection, a custom-curated premium channel that will feature the studio’s massive film and TV library of over 20,000 titles. The channel, which will feature titles such as “Weeds” and “Nurse Jackie”, and films such as “Now You See Me” and “The Expendables,” will launch in the coming weeks on the paid TV giant’s satellite and streaming offerings, including MyFree DirecTV.
Joey Chestnut is getting hungry – and he told TMZ he’s ready to “drop the hammer” in his big return to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4 – with an INSANE goal in mind. The world’s greatest eater has just announced that he will again be competing in the Independence Day tradition after a year away due to sponsorship drama — and he’s looking to make up for lost time. Chestnut said it would be a “dream” if he could down 80 hot dogs in the 10-minute contest this year. That would be 4 more than his current event record.

DID YA KNOW!?
The world’s most popular messaging platform, WhatsApp will soon be displaying ads. Meta made the announcement this week, reversing WhatsApp’s longtime stance against advertising. The good news? You may not notice a difference — if you only use it to text your international friends and family. The company indicated that messages will remain ad-free, and sponsored content will only appear in Updates, a social tab launched 2 years ago which is similar to the “Stories” feature on other apps.

Summer’s heating up — and so are your drink options. From new Coca-Cola flavors to retro craft root beer, there’s something for everyone. But when it’s hot and you’re on the move, nothing hits like Gatorade. And now, the classic hydration go-to is packing serious flavor variety. This year, Gatorade has brought back Aqua Blast, made Midnight Ice and Lightning Blast permanent, and launched Mashups — combos of fan-favorite flavors. And now, there’s a new kid on the block: Summer Blaze. Available exclusively at Circle K, the 28-ounce bottle’s flavor hasn’t been officially revealed, but the internet says it screams “peach.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/56p6r7v9

WEIRD NEWS
Here’s what might be the next “wearable tech”: Imagine wearing a sticker on your forehead that tells you when your brain’s overloaded. That’s exactly what researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have created. It’s an ultra-thin, wireless “e-tattoo” you stick on your skin, and it monitors brain activity and eye movements to gauge mental stress in real time. Perfect for high-stakes jobs like air traffic control, piloting, or truck driving, the tattoo measures EEG and EOG signals – with no bulky cap or goo required. In tests with memory tasks, it was able to detect the brain waves that indicate rising effort and increasing fatigue. A smart algorithm even predicts when you’re nearing cognitive burnout. The whole setup costs under $200 – much cheaper than a traditional $15,000 EEG system. While still in trials, the dream is that one day, these face tattoos could help everyone from surgeons to meditators stay in their mental “sweet spot.”

HOW DOESN’T EVERYONE KNOW THIS?
There are many “common knowledge” facts that we don’t realize we don’t know — until someone points them out. Recently, a Reddit user asked: “What’s your biggest ‘how do people NOT know this?’ fact?” Here are some of the best answers…
⇒ “Flammable and inflammable mean the same thing.”
⇒ “All Visa credit cards start with a 4. All Mastercard credit cards start with a 5. All Amex credit cards start with a 3. And Discover starts with 6.”
⇒ “Butterflies have four wings, not two.”
⇒ “The Better Business Bureau is not a government agency. They don’t hold any legal power.”
⇒ “The Underground Railroad was not a literal subterranean locomotive.”
⇒ “Cows have to get pregnant to make milk — they don’t just make milk.”
⇒ “Copy and pasting: Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. The number of people who go through life working in (an) office and have no idea about this is astounding. Truly worrying.”
⇒ “There are 4 quarts in a gallon because they are quarter gallons.”
⇒ “Percentages are reversible. Like, 8% of 25 is the same as 25% of 8, and one of them is much easier to do in your head.” (Mind. Blown…”)
