SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Scientists say they think they may have discovered why it’s so easy to pack to the pounds back on after losing weight – your cells remember being fat. Well, not YOURS specifically, but fat cells in general. According to a recent study by a team of Swiss researchers, fat cells indeed have a “memory” of being obese, affecting “metabolic pathways” in the body long after pounds are shed. This means that after someone loses weight, their fat cells don’t fully go back to “normal”, which can make it easier to regain weight and stay in a state that promotes inflammation and metabolic issues. To counter this, one expert suggested: “Keep moving, eating real food and building muscle.”
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Don’t expect Mark Hamill to return to the “Star Wars” universe anytime soon. In a recent interview, he discussed his future in the sci-fi universe. While he was the one to kick it off with “A New Hope” in 1977 alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, Hamill has no interest in taking the saga any further. Quote: “We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.” He then joked that he disappeared in “The Last Jedi”, saying: “I left my robes behind. And there’s no way I’m gonna appear as a naked force ghost.”
Haley Joel Osment must attend AA meetings for 6 months. In April, he was arrested on charges of alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. The “Sixth Sense” actor was arraigned in court on Monday, and granted a one-year diversion by the judge. The Mono County district attorney reportedly objected to the diversion request due to Osment’s prior DUI conviction, as well as the actor using racial slurs against a police officer while being arrested, but was overruled.
A newly released teaser trailer for “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” gives the first glimpse of the highly anticipated film, which “follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s,” according to the official synopsis. It adds, “As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter.” Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale hits theaters Sept. 12. DID YA KNOW!?
Air conditioners are making global warming worse, a new study has found. As the summertime mercury rises, thousands – or millions – will crank the air conditioning to full blast – and probably complain about global warming. But it turns out those A/Cs are part of the problem: Researchers from the University of Wisconsin say air conditioners further degrade air quality and generally compound the toll on human health created by air pollution. The study predicts that as many as 1000 additional deaths will occur every year in the Eastern US alone, due to the increased use of fossil fuels to cool steadily-warming buildings where people live and work.

OF THE DAY
Some people are just lucky — and then there’s David Serkin. The Lethbridge AB man just scored his FOURTH lottery win, snagging a cool $1 million in the May 3 Lotto 6-49 Gold Ball draw. If you’re keeping track (and maybe shaking your fist a bit in envy…), that’s $2.5 million in less than 9 months. Let’s rewind:
• Last August, Serkin pocketed $500,000 on a Lotto Max ticket.
• Three months later? Another $1 million.
• And now? Yep. Another mil.
Oh — and he also won $250,000 back in 2012. Because, why not?
Serkin admitted that he knows “the odds are astronomical,” and while he doesn’t think he’ll ever win again, he still likes buying tickets. BTW, the odds of winning the Lotto Max jackpot are 1 in 33 million. So yeah, if you’re looking for a human good luck charm, David’s probably your guy. He’s been playing 6-49 since it launched in 1982. He’s a cancer survivor, retired, and said: “I’m just grateful for all of it.” With his last big win, Serkin took his wife to Hawaii. This time? They’re headed to Newfoundland.

WEIRD NEWS
An expert is predicting that those handy moving walkways that we rely on when moving through an airport with our luggage may someday soon become a thing of the past. USA-based airline, hotel and loyalty program expert Ben Schlapping points out that many airports are decommissioning these convenient walkways for one reason. He explained that airports are businesses, and they make money in 2 main ways: fees related to flying, and passengers’ spending while at the airport. And it would seem that airport operators increasingly want to delay fliers from plopping down in a seat at their gate. They’d much rather have them wandering the airport stores and kiosks, spending as much money as possible.

THE LIST
THINGS YOU SHOULDN’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT SPLURGING ON:
According to happiness researcher Jessica Weiss, these purchases trigger a lasting and sustainable kind of happiness . . .
☞ Live music: Studies show group singing reduces oxytocin and cortisol levels and creates a sense of belonging that can last for days after the final encore.
☞ Novel experiences: Even small things, like visiting a new farmer’s market, a new hairdo, or painting your nails an unexpected color, can make life feel richer and more textured.
☞ Time-saving purchases: Buying time is like buying sanity. That meal delivery service or house cleaner isn’t a luxury; it’s a mental health investment.
☞ Activities that boost your relationships: A dinner with friends or plane ticket to visit your sister? It’s not just a purchase — it’s a deposit into your emotional retirement account, because close relationships have been shown to predict happiness even better than wealth.
☞ Being generous to others: Scientists call it the “helper’s high”. It’s that warm rush you get when you cover a friend’s lunch or donate to a good cause. That’s because your reward circuits fire more intensely then, than they do when you spend on yourself.
☞ Small joys: It’s true: That $4 specialty coffee twice weekly delivers more cumulative joy than one $400 splurge.
☞ Counterintuitive challenges: “Earned pleasures” like plunging into cold water, completing a tough hike, or mastering a difficult skill, create lasting satisfaction.
☞ Making plans in advance: Booking a vacation or a reunion creates a happiness triple play: anticipation joy, experience joy and memory joy. They begin delivering happiness the moment you book it, long before you pack your bags.
