SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Avocados aren’t just for toast anymore—they might also help you sleep better. A new study tracked nearly 1,000 adults with abdominal obesity, asking half of them to eat one avocado a day for 26 weeks. As expected, the avocado group saw healthier cholesterol levels and better overall diets. But researchers were surprised to find another bonus: improved sleep. They think it might be due to the fruit’s rich mix of fiber, healthy fats, potassium, and other nutrients. That said, don’t expect avocado alone to knock you out—it’s one piece of the sleep puzzle, not a magic bedtime snack.

Netflix is looking to remake another classic TV series. It has closed a deal for the rights to reboot the 1970s sci-fi adventure show “Land of the Lost”. The show centered on a father, ‘Rick’, and his 2 children who accidentally go through a portal and find themselves trapped in a world inhabited by dinosaurs. It originated as a children’s series which aired on NBC Saturday mornings from 1974-76, with CBS giving it a summer run in 1985 and 1987.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” star Shamier Anderson has landed the role of controversial Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson in “Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story”. Airing early next year, Anderson will play the runner who was the world’s fastest man at the 1988 Olympics, but was stripped of his medals for doping. The quote-unquote “definitely-not-biased account” of the controversy will take a satirical look at events surrounding the legendary race and the scandal behind the scandal. Paramount+ has been developing the series for the past couple of years in Canada.
It’s been nearly 16 years since the “balloon boy” story captured the attention of millions. And now, the family behind “one of America’s most infamous, and bizarre news stories” is speaking out in an upcoming Netflix documentary. Premiering July 15, “Trainwreck: Balloon Boy” revisits the notorious day in 2009 when a homemade flying saucer soared through the Colorado sky — supposedly with a 6-year-old boy on board. But, as the public later learned, the child was not inside the saucer after all, stirring outrage from both the local community and the American public.
Kevin Spacey thanked his “The Man Who Drew God” co-star/director Franco Nero for having “the guts” to cast him in the movie while accepting his Maximo Excellent award at the 2025 Italian Global Series Festival. Spacey noted how the filmmaker “stepped up” a few years ago, “when very few had the guts”. Nero wrote, directed and starred in the 2022 drama alongside Spacey and Faye Dunaway. The former “House of Cards” star had been accused by actor Anthony Rapp of making sexual advances toward him when he was just 14. Spacey was found not liable.
DID YA KNOW!?
Drinking your coffee black could help you live longer. In a study of the java habits of more than 46,000 people, those who drink 1-2 cups of black coffee a day (or coffee with small amounts of added sugar and saturated fat) were linked to a 14% lower risk of death from any cause. The study, carried out by researchers at Tufts University, also found that coffee with high amounts of added sugar and saturated fat had no health benefits.

OF THE DAY
Scientists say strawberries and blueberries slow memory decline.
This could be even better than Ozempic! there’s a brand-new pill called SANA from a Uruguayan startup, Eolo Pharma, that helps you burn fat — without messing with your appetite. Instead of curbing hunger like Ozempic and other weight loss drugs do, it revs up your body’s fat-burning furnace at the cellular level — via something called creatine-dependent thermogenesis. That’s a fancy term for “heat-producing fat burn.” In a small trial, people lost about 3% of their weight in just 2 weeks without feeling less hungry. It’s derived from salicylate (think aspirin) and even seems to preserve muscle in mice on high-fat diets. The best part? It is well-tolerated, with minimal side effects. Now Eolo’s gearing up for a much bigger Phase II trial later this year.

WEIRD NEWS
Police in North Charleston SC spent over an hour chasing a stolen excavator — yes, the giant, slow construction kind – at speeds topping out at a blazing 3 mph – and officers actually had to stop periodically so they didn’t pass it. The lights-on and sirens-blaring chase began after the 53-year-old driver allegedly burglarized a nearby business using the excavator, causing major property damage. Several cars joined in the very slow speed pursuit, and other cruisers were used to block traffic. Despite repeated warnings over loudspeakers, the excavator-man kept trundling along until the machine got stuck at the local fairgrounds. He tried to make a run for it, but a drone and police dog ended his slow-mo getaway.

THE LIST
THE THINGS WE WASTE TOO MUCH MONEY ON:
According to a self-made millionaire…
☞ Bulk grocery shopping (that ends up in the trash): How many times have you bought the mega pack of spinach, only to throw half away a week later? You’re not getting a deal if you toss what you paid for in the garbage.
☞ Decorative household items for every season: Instead of spending on decorations that will be outdated soon, invest in timeless, high-quality home essentials and switch things up with small, inexpensive accents like candles or flowers.
☞ Children’s toys: Some parents spend hundreds – or thousands — on toys that their kids lose interest in within weeks. Less is more. Rotate toys instead of buying new ones, and prioritize experiences over stuff.
☞ Shoes that are bad for your feet: Stop buying shoes that don’t fit, don’t support your feet or that’ll only be worn once. A few high-quality pairs of comfortable, well-made shoes will take you further than a closet full of ‘medieval torture devices’.
☞ High-end skincare products: The beauty industry convinces us we need a 12-step routine with $80 serums – but most of it is pure marketing hype. Stick to simple, dermatologist-approved products that actually work.
☞ Overpriced athleisure: $15 warehouse leggings and free t-shirts are just as good as the $100 Lululemon ones. Some love to justify expensive activewear by saying it motivates them to work out, but a fancy outfit doesn’t do push-ups for you.
