SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Do you feel exhausted before your day even starts? You’re not alone: about 1 in 3 people say they’re already drained the moment they wake up. And it only gets worse from there. A new survey of 2,000 Americans reveals what’s zapping our energy, and it’s not just a bad night’s sleep (though that definitely doesn’t help…). Interruptions, awkward small talk, and unsolicited advice top the list of social energy killers. Add in gloomy weather, money stress, and office gossip, and it’s no wonder we’re worn out before lunch — with the average crash hitting at 11:54am. And physical energy isn’t faring much better. Lack of sleep (42%) and constant housework (28%) are dragging people down. And while most people agree that staying hydrated helps, the average person drinks just over 5 cups of water a day — well below the recommended 8 or 9. And how do we fight back? Caffeine, loud music, power naps, a quick walk outside, or even a bit of stretching are the top methods put in use to feel less like a zombie.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The 38th edition of the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards took over Santa Monica on Saturday. Hosted by Tyla, the awards show featured performances by Machine Gun Kelly and KATSEYE, as well as skateboarding stunts by Tony Hawk and Katelyn West, and several slimings. Winners included Ariana Grande, Dwayne Johnson, SZA, Bruno Mars, and Sabrina Carpenter, as well as the stars of “Wicked”, “Cobra Kai”, and “The Thundermans: Undercover”. Jack Black received a Silver Blimp as he was crowned King of Comedy for his career of hilarious work, while Rihanna received the first-ever ICON Silver Blimp.

The new Pixar film “Elio” has set the dubious record of suffering the worst opening weekend in the studio’s history. The animated movie is projected to have finished its debut weekend at the domestic box office with a total of just over $22 million. That puts it at #3, behind horror movie “28 Years Later”, and the live-action remake “How to Train Your Dragon”, which held onto the top spot in its second weekend with $35.7 million.

Paris Hilton has purchased Mark Wahlberg’s former mansion after losing her Malibu home in the LA wildfires. She’s the new owner of a roughly 30,500-square-foot, 12-bedroom Beverly Park property. There’s a sports court made for basketball and tennis, plus a skate park, 5-hole golf course with a driving range and a resort-style pool with waterslides. There’s also a wine cellar in the main house, as well as 20 bathrooms, a grand entryway with dual staircases, a 2-story library, a movie theater and a gym. Oh, and did I mention the price? $63 million.

Johnny Depp says the industry used him as the #MeToo test case, likening himself to a “crash test dummy” in a new interview. In an interview with The Times, he was asked about his relationship with Amber Heard — and his excommunication from Hollywood circles. Depp pointed out he was taken to task even before allegations against Harvey Weinstein came out, as a so-called “crash test dummy”. Depp — who is making a career comeback, including directing Al Pacino and Stephen Graham in the new flick “Modi” — said he was a “sucker” for falling for Heard.

DID YA KNOW!?

Surgery is a more effective long-term weight-loss option than Ozempic or other weight-loss injections, according to new research. A clinical study at NYU Langone Health found that going under the knife – known as bariatric surgery – is associated with about 5 times more weight loss than weekly injections of GLP-1 receptor agonists semaglutide or tirzepatide at the end of 2 years. Patients who had a bariatric procedure lost an average 58 pounds (26kg) after 2 years, compared to 12 pounds (5.4kg) for patients who received a GLP-1 prescription for at least 6 months.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study claims Facebook users can be affected by the mood of their friends.

New drugs designed to allow our dogs to live longer might not only extend your pet’s life — it could pave the way for humans to live longer too. A biotech company called Loyal is working on canine anti-aging drugs. Founder Celine Halioua, who used to work on human brain diseases, is now focused on giving our furry friends more happy, healthy years. Loyal is testing several treatments, especially for big breeds like Great Danes, which sadly don’t live as long as many other breeds. One drug, LOY-001, is an injectable; another, LOY-003, is a chewable pill. They’re designed to slow aging by targeting hormones that cause cells to burn out too fast. Another drug being tested, LOY-002, aims to boost metabolism in senior sniffers. The ultimate goal is to come up with a drug that adds at least one good year to your dog’s life — and improve their health while doing it. And the research could even teach us humans a few things about aging.

✓ Kraft produces enough Cool Whip each year to fill the Grand Canyon.

✓ There are over 100 billion known galaxies. How many unknown galaxies there are — is not known. (Makes sense…)

WEIRD NEWS

A 22-year-old fake dentist and 2 assistants have been charged by Czech police after treating dozens of patients — using instructions they found on the internet. Police said the 3 family members opened a surgery center without a license in their home in Havlickuv Brod 2 years ago, and treated patients without any “necessary professional knowledge”. The 22-year-old man extracted teeth, performed complex root canals and applied anesthesia, drawing on information he had obtained online. All pleaded guilty to a number of charges, and face up to 8 years in prison. The illegal clinic treated dozens of patients and made 4 million Czech koruna ($185,500). Police did not say whether any of their patients had complained about their treatment.
