SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Swearing isn’t just about being rude — our brains actually use curse words to vent, connect, and cope. New research analyzing over 1.7 billion words online found that swearing can build social bonds and boost resilience. The study looked at English across 20 regions and found 597 different swear word forms — from “wtf” to, well, that’s about the only one I can say. It was found that Americans swear the most online, beating out Brits and Australians, despite the US having more conservative views on public morality. Aussies, often seen as top-tier swearers, were the most creative — but held back online. And it turns out that native English speakers swear more and with more flair than those who speak it as a second language. The bottom line? Swearing is part of being human. It’s bonding, funny, sometimes poetic — and trying to ban it only makes it stronger. Frickin’ ironic, isn’t it?

DID YA KNOW!?
Happy people remember things more effectively than others. That’s according to British researchers, who found that those with higher psychological wellbeing consistently performed better on memory tests over 16 years. The protective effect worked across all aspects of wellbeing — feeling in control, autonomous, fulfilled, and experiencing daily pleasure. The scientists say their results suggest that nurturing our psychological wellbeing may be a key to protecting cognitive function as we age.

OF THE DAY
A survey found that 62% of people are simply “going through the motions” at their jobs.
Weeds — including those dandelions that have been taking over my lawn over the past few weeks — might be the enemy of the arborist, but according to gardener Jamie Walton, they’re secretly nutritional powerhouses — and we should be eating them, not yanking them. Walton, who is an ecological gardener in the UK, has built a huge following online for his nature-friendly approach to gardening. In his new book “Nettles and Petals”, he makes the case for giving weeds a second look — and even a spot on your dinner plate. Take dandelions: every part is edible, and full of vitamins A, C, and K. The flowers make a sweet syrup, and the roots can be used as a coffee substitute. Nettles? Think of them as supercharged spinach — just boil the sting out first. They’re packed with iron and are great in soups or stir-fries. Walton’s philosophy is simple: work with nature, not against it. Sometimes the healthiest greens are the ones we’ve been digging out of the ground.

✓ The first day of summer (in the Northern Hemisphere) is always between June 20th and June 22nd. It varies due to the Earth’s rotation not exactly reflecting our calendar year.
✓ The word “summer” is from the Proto-Indo-European root *sam-, meaning summer. *sam comes from the word *sem, meaning “together/one”.
✓ The “dog days of summer” refer to the weeks between July 3 and August 11 and are named after the Dog Star (Sirius)
✓ Television used to show only reruns during the summer months. The theory was that everyone was outside enjoying the weather.
✓ Scientists say that summer babies are significantly more likely to suffer from mood swings than babies born in other seasons.
WEIRD NEWS
The makers of Blue Moon think their orangey-flavored beer tastes so good, that people would enjoy it as a lip-balm. Yes, really. The brewery teamed up with Eos to create a balm inspired by the punchy, Valencia orange flavor that’s brewed into a Blue Moon beer, complete with hints of vanilla. The citrus-inspired balm is packaged in Eos’ orange-colored sphere and “delivers the same refreshing, juicy taste” of the beer, but doesn’t contain any actual alcohol, so you won’t get tipsy from your lip care routine. It’s available now at Eos’ and Blue Moon’s Websites for $4.99 LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3aennhff

THE LIST
THE BEST SUMMER MOVIES EVER:
According to the movie experts at the Globe & Mail…
1. “Jaws” (1974): It was not only the first movie to be widely advertised on TV, it’s also considered the first-ever summer blockbuster. Plus…Spielberg.
2. “Independence Day” (1996): It took the disaster-movie playbook of the 1970s and scaled it up to summer-spectacle territory par excellence. (And Randy Quaid essentially saved America by flying up an alien spacecraft’s butt!)
3. “Do the Right Thing” (1989): Rosie Perez dancing to Public Enemy. Samuel L. Jackson waking up the entirety of Brooklyn. This is the long summer day that changed Spike Lee’s life, and the lives of many moviegoers.
4. “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995): If the first Die Hard is a Christmas movie, then the 3rd chapter in the book of John McClane is a certified summer-movie classic: gritty and sweaty, panicked and preposterous, and always, always hot.
5. “Stand By Me” (1986): Director Rob Reiner compressed several generations’ worth of coming-of-age nostalgia into one perfectly concentrated dose of end-of-summer, friends-forever adventure.
6. “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” (1982): Never mind the alien: Spielberg created a school-free stretch of wild bike rides, friendships forged in fire, and the instinctive joy of defying authority.
7. “Star Wars” (1977): In terms of our very concepts of entertainment, nostalgia and “brand awareness,” there is ‘before’ Star Wars, and ‘after’.
8. “Grease” (1978): Coming off “Saturday Night Fever”, John Travolta was at the peak of his powers, while Olivia Newton-John cast a spell over roughly half the North American population. (Tell me more, tell me more…)
9. “Jurassic Park” (1993): Supersizing his own Jaws formula, Spielberg slickly officiated the summer’s marriage of movies and merch. But the end product was terrifying, beautiful, dangerously clever.
10. “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022): Not kidding. It’s not only a rip-roaring, fantastically fun sequel, but the movie that reignited the summer season itself, just as it was set to ride into the danger zone, never to return.
