THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

I hate to travel. It’s not my thing. My wife loves to travel, so I encourage her to travel without me when she has a great idea. She'll be going to Europe with her friend for two weeks this summer. I’m happy with it. But then she told me she was going to stay on after the trip and rent a house for three extras weeks to explore more of Europe on her own. I’m a little shocked. But I told her she should do it. Was that right? This is going to end up being over a month away. Do I have any right to be upset about this? Should I try to invite myself along for a week at the end?

Signed – Hubby at Home

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

New research says vaping may be even more addictive than nicotine gum — especially for young people who’ve never smoked regular cigarettes. The study focused on pod-style vapes, which have become super popular in the last decade, particularly among those under 25. These devices use nicotine salts — which make the hit smoother and less harsh — especially appealing to vape newbies. Researchers found that when regular vapers (who never smoked cigarettes) were given either nicotine gum or their usual vape, the vape did a much better job at killing cravings and boosting satisfaction. In short: it was way more addictive. That’s a big deal, because earlier studies concluded that vapes were about as addictive as gum — but those were mostly done on people who already smoked. This new study shows that for a growing group of nicotine users who never smoked, vaping might be their first — and very sticky — step into addiction.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

A new Hulu documentary is revisiting Barbara Walters’ most scathing interviews throughout her decades-long career. In a sneak peek trailer for “Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything,” celebs like Taylor Swift, the Kardashians and now-President Trump appear in footage highlighting the late broadcast journalist’s most memorable sit-downs. At one point, Walters can be seen telling Swift: “I know you don’t want to talk about guys, and I won’t push it, but how are you going to find anybody?” Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything begins streaming June 23 on Hulu. Netflix has confirmed Lada Gaga’s cameo appearance in the second season of “Wednesday”, and dropped the first 6 minutes of the premiere. At the streamer’s annual Tudum event, Gaga performed an original song that will be featured on this season’s soundtrack. Part 1 of the hit series, led by Jenna Ortega, will air on August 6. News of Gaga’s part, which she shot in Ireland in one day, was leaked in November. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yt4x86s5

As expected, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” easily held on to the #1 spot at the domestic box office, earning an estimated $61.5 million in its second weekend. That puts the latest Disney remake at a 2-weekend total of $278 million, enough to exceed the inflation-adjusted total of the original “Lilo & Stitch” in 2002 after just 10 days. The new release “Karate Kid: Legends,” made a projected $22 million, putting it 3rd, behind the $27 million second weekend of “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.”

DID YA KNOW!?

More companies these days are adding former employees to their payrolls, a practice known as boomerang hiring, according to a recent ADP analysis. In March, 35% of new hires were returning employees, compared to 31% a year prior, an indication that hitting up a former boss is an increasingly popular job-hunting tactic. ADP attributes the trend to a slower hiring market than during the Great Resignation of 2022, when job-hopping was almost a national sport. These days, employees are more cautious about jumping ship – while employers have become more selective about who they hire, particularly in industries requiring highly skilled workers.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Stats show that law school applications have fallen to an all-time low.

Drinking your sugar may be worse than eating it. A new study from Brigham Young University found that sugary drinks like soda, fruit juice, and energy drinks are more strongly linked to type 2 diabetes than sugary foods. In fact, just one 12-ounce soft drink a day was tied to a 25% higher risk. Even 100% fruit juice wasn’t off the hook, showing a smaller but still real risk. Interestingly, sugar from food didn’t show the same effect—and might even be linked to a lower risk. The takeaway? Skip the sweet drinks, even the “healthy” ones, and chew your sugar instead.

WEIRD NEWS

And you thought Southwest Airlines was overstepping with its announcement that it is now charging for checked baggage, marking the end of its “two bags fly free” policy. Now, airline passengers headed for Turkey will be fined . . . if they stand up before the seatbelt sign turns off after landing. The Turkish civil aviation authority decided to make the move after receiving complaints from passengers. Turkish media said fines are around US$70, although the authority hasn’t officially mentioned the amount. Apparently, the new fine came about after a “serious increase” in complaints about passengers grabbing overhead baggage before their plane had been parked.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
