SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If money troubles are keeping you up at night, you’re probably thinking that if you made more cash, you’d be able to sleep better. Well, according to new research, you’d actually be much more likely to rest easy if you were to develop healthy financial habits. A study tracking 20,000 Australians for more than 2 decades found that those who develop good financial habits — like regular saving and paying off credit cards on time – tend to actually boost their mental well-being in measurable ways. It was found that adopting good financial habits can boost mental health scores by nearly half a percentage point—a meaningful improvement that could reduce stress, worry, and sadness. Crucially, the study controlled for income levels, meaning these benefits weren’t simply about having more money. Participants with identical incomes but different financial habits showed markedly different mental health outcomes.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Disney and Universal have filed a copyright lawsuit against popular AI image-generator Midjourney, marking the first time major Hollywood companies have entered the legal battle over generative AI. The complaint claims Midjourney pirated the libraries of the 2 Hollywood studios to generate and distribute “endless unauthorized copies” of their famed characters, such as ‘Darth Vader’ and the Minions from “Despicable Me”.

“Harry Potter” actor Gary Oldman and former England soccer captain David Beckham were knighted in King Charles’ annual birthday honours list on Saturday. Oscar winner Oldman has honored for his contributions to drama, while Beckham was knighted for services to sport and charity. The Who singer Roger Daltrey, also a patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust, received a knighthood for services to charity.

Nick Cannon is taking on a new hosting gig. Cannon, host of Fox’s hit competition series “The Masked Singer”, has joined “Lego Masters” as host, taking over for Will Arnett, who served as host for the show’s first 5 seasons. Arnett is leaving due to scheduling conflicts. Based on the hit British reality-competition series of the same name, Lego Masters brings imagination, design and creativity to life when teams of Lego enthusiasts go head-to-head, with infinite possibilities and an unlimited supply of Lego bricks.

DID YA KNOW!?

A new study shows that the secret to portion control – and therefore, the secret to effective weight management – could very well be a cinch. A cinch of hot peppers added to your meals, that is. Pennsylvania State University researchers found that hot peppers caused people to eat significantly less food — up to 18% fewer calories — without affecting how much they enjoyed their meal. The secret weapon? Capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers burn your tongue. When your mouth encounters capsaicin, you naturally slow your eating pace, take smaller or less frequent bites, and spend more time processing each mouthful, giving your brain more time to signal to your body that you’re feeling full.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A survey says that 60% of us say a man should never wear short shorts.

KFC has joined the “dirty soda” game—and they’re doing it with help from Mountain Dew. This week, KFC restaurants began pouring a limited-edition Peaches and Cream Sweet Lightning soda. It’s a creamy, fruity spin on their exclusive Sweet Lightning drink. The new version is described as tasting like a honey creamsicle—with a smooth swirl of vanilla cream mixed in. The viral “dirty soda” trend is the mix-your-own soda craze that took off on TikTok, often involving cola, cream, syrups, and even candy. And the bonus twist with this one is you can add more vanilla cream swirl, to customize your cup.

WEIRD NEWS

If you’re looking for a 4-bedroom suite in the heart of London with killer views, I know just the place. But it’ll cost you – big time. The luxurious new penthouse at the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair is perched on the 11th floor of Mayfair’s first newly built hotel in a decade. It sprawls over 5,000 square feet and is decked out with hand-painted wallpaper, a marble tub, museum-worthy art, and a sleek design by Studio Indigo. But the real showstopper? Two levels of wraparound terrace with sweeping 180-degree views of the city. Of course, all that glam doesn’t come cheap. A night here starts at a mind-bending £40,000 (around US $54,000)—which, for context, could pay for over a year’s stay at a Travelodge just down the road.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Just 2 in 100 people have THESE. What are they?

Answer: Green eyes

THE LIST

MYTHBUSTERS: SUNSCREEN EDITION…

These statements, contrary to what you have probably been told, are all myths. Each will be followed by the facts…

Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen/can’t get melanoma: Darker skin tones are less prone to skin cancer, but this can also mean the signs of trouble are ignored.

A base tan protects you: A base tan is nature’s way of producing sun protection because you’ve been irradiated. But that doesn’t lessen your risk of skin cancer, and constant tanning ages your skin.

You don’t need to use sunscreen inside: All contact with sunlight requires protection, even exposure through an office or car window — and walking from building to building.

The number on sunscreen is proportionate to the number of minutes of sun protection: Nope. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to burn protected skin. SPF 15 allows 1/15 of harmful UVB rays to reach the skin. That means you’re protecting against 93% of UVB radiation. So, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 prevents 98%.

The SPF in makeup is enough: Maybe for a few minutes. But if you’re outside longer than 15 minutes, you need higher SPF and must reapply.

One application of sunscreen in the morning is good for the whole day: Reapplying is just as important as the first coat. Sunscreen gets consumed when light hits it, which means you need more, regularly.

You don’t need sunscreen during off-peak hours: The sun can cause damage no matter what time it is. If you’re outside for longer than 15 minutes, use protection. You can get burned at 8am, or after4 pm.

Sunscreen on your face, arms, back, and legs is enough: It’s a great start, but you should also apply it to the ears, nose, hands and the tops of your feet. And remember your scalp, especially if you have thinning or sparse hair.

Melanoma is only caused by sun exposure: It can strike without sun exposure, which makes regular skin checks important. Sun exposure does make the risk higher.
