SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Are you tired of constant news alerts coming across your smartphone? You’re not alone. A global survey by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that these days, nearly 80% of people don’t receive any news alerts in a typical week — and almost half of us have actively turned them off. Why? Too many pings, not enough value. As Nic Newman, the lead researcher, put it, news agencies are walking a fine line. Most limit how many alerts they send, because they’re trying to avoid overwhelming users with too much noise. And even though news alerts are more common than a decade ago, many people feel bombarded by notifications from every direction: news, sports, calendars, group chats, and social media — not to mention weather. The takeaway? News alerts can be useful, but when they’re constant, clickbaity, or repetitive, most of us would rather just turn ’em off.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Michael Douglas has no intention of returning to acting, he told an audience at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia, where he presented a newly restored print of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Douglas spoke about his battle against throat cancer, and said that up until 2022, he had “been working pretty hard for almost 60 years”, but didn’t “want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.” Douglas did leave some wiggle room for a return, though, pointing out he doesn’t refer to himself as retired, “because if something special came up, I’d go back, but otherwise, no.”
Scarlett Johansson has become the world’s highest box office grossing actor following the release of “Jurassic World Rebirth”. The new blockbuster has seen the grand total of Johansson’s film credits jump to $14.61 billion, putting her in the #1 position as the star with the most box office success – ahead of fellow Marvel stars Samuel L Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. Johansson was catapulted to stardom in 2003 by her role in Sofia Coppola’s “Lost in Translation”. Her other huge successes include her ongoing work in the MCU as ‘Black Widow’, as well as in “Lucy”, and voice roles in films such as “The Jungle Book”, and the “Sing” movies.
Molly Shannon likes the idea of Kenan Thompson one day taking over from longtime “Saturday Night Live” showrunner Lorne Michaels, despite calling Michaels “irreplaceable.” Asked what she thought about Thompson — who is the longest-tenured cast member ever on the sketch comedy series — potentially taking the reins at the NBC show, Shannon, who was a cast member between 1995 and 2001, said: “I love this idea. He’s the greatest — I adore Kenan,” and added that he is “so talented.” In September 2024, Michaels, who is 80, addressed speculation over his future, telling The Hollywood Reporter he had no “immediate” plans to retire.
“Jurassic World: Rebirth” proved why dinosaurs have such staying power at the box office – enjoying an extended box office opening of $141 million over 5 days. While lower than the $145 million 3-day opening of “Jurassic World: Dominion” in 2022, it is part of a global $312 million start going back to the film’s launch in China other overseas markets last Tuesday. That gives “Rebirth” the second largest worldwide launch of 2025 – behind only “A Minecraft Movie.” “F1” came second with a $24 million sophomore weekend, domestically.
DID YA KNOW!?
The classic ‘dad-bod’ is the body type women find most attractive. A new study found that women find this body type — a bit soft with some extra padding — even more attractive than chiseled abs. Researchers showed people from China, Lithuania, and the UK photos of men with different body types, and the top-rated bodies had a BMI between 23 and 27. The reason? It may signal better survival and reproductive health. So skipping the gym for a beer now and then might not be so bad after all. On the other hand, as you might have expected, while women tend to pick a partner based on their evolutionary advantages, men prefer women who are thinner than what’s considered “evolutionary optimal”.

OF THE DAY
Box office revenue for January 1st to April 3rd was down 13%, compared to the same time last year.
Imagine a pair of smart glasses that works as an ad blocker – but it blocks ads in real life. That’s exactly what software engineer Stijn Spanhove showed off in a concept video using “Snap Spectacles” — and honestly, I want them immediately. The idea is this: Your glasses use AI to recognize ads in your field of vision and blur them out in real time. So goodbye, Wendy’s billboard. And hello Monet painting — or whatever else it is that you’d rather see. Spanhove hasn’t perfected the tech yet, but he’s getting close. After all, smart glasses like Meta’s Ray-Bans already know what you’re looking at. The next step is replacing what you don’t want to see. And yes, there are ethical concerns — and pushback from advertisers. But let’s be honest: Who wouldn’t want to wear these babies pretty much all the time? LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrxre667

Heinz is officially making a move into your morning routine. For the first time in its 150+ year history, the brand is marketing its iconic ketchup — specifically as a breakfast condiment. With a bold new label proclaiming “Breakfast Ketchup”, Heinz is aiming to settle the long-standing debate: does ketchup belong on breakfast foods? Spoiler: they say “yes”. The new campaign includes limited-edition maple syrup-style bottles at select diners, digital ads in NYC subways, and even a custom Wordle buy. The product inside? Still the same ketchup you know and love — simply rebranded for your eggs, bacon, and hash browns.
