SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Last week, we learned that taking a cold shower – or taking a hot shower, for that matter – are NOT recommended as a method of cooling off during a heatwave. But what about when you AREN’T suffering from the heat? Is taking a hot bath a good idea? Or would a sauna be even better? Scientists at the University of Oregon determined that hot water immersion significantly outperforms both traditional and infrared saunas, leading to greater increases in core body temperature, heart rate, cardiac output, and reductions in blood pressure—mimicking the benefits of moderate-intensity exercise. In tests, hot water immersion (as in a hot bath) triggered measurable immune responses up to 48 hours later, suggesting potential long-term immune benefits. Using a sauna did not. The research team says their study highlights how hot baths offer a practical, affordable way to gain cardiovascular and immune system benefits, challenging the trend of expensive sauna therapies and underscoring the importance of consistent, sustained heat exposure for maximum effects.

J.K. Rowling has once again clapped back at Pedro Pascal after he reignited their feud during a recent interview. Their latest war of words came after Pascal accused Rowling of being a “heinous loser” for her views on women’s rights, doubling down on comments he made earlier this year. The feud began when Rowling praised a Supreme Court ruling that protected women-only spaces, sparking outrage from Pascal. He revisited the issue a few days ago, explaining that his anger stemmed from a desire to stand up to what he perceives as bullying. In a scathing X post, Rowling responded: “Can’t say I feel very shut down, but keep at it, Pedro. God loves a trier.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrxwfb8p

Cynthia Erivo is set to star in and produce an adaptation of author Adrian Tchaikovsky’s sci-fi action thriller “Saturation Point”. The film centers on “Dr. Jasmine Marks”, who leads a search and rescue mission into The Zone — a section of rainforest along the equator with a climate inhospitable to intelligent life. The film’s logline says: “As she pushes further into the wilderness, (she) discovers the Zone is far deadlier than initially believed and not all forms of intelligent life are necessarily human.”

In honor of its 50th anniversary and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, “Good Morning America” has launched a new yearlong series, “50 States in 50 Weeks: America the Beautiful.” The weekly series kicks off tomorrow from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, the first state to join the Union, and will run through July 2026. Each week will feature a new state, following the order in which they joined the U.S., to highlight a local changemaker and showcase the state’s unique culture, history, traditions and landmarks.

“Squid Game” may be over, but its legacy will live on. In its first 3 days, the third season of the thriller made it onto Netflix’s Most Popular non-English language shows list, securing 60.1 million views and breaking the record for most views for a show in that time frame. Squid Game remains the only show to appear on that list within its first week. Additionally, the third season of the dystopian drama was ranked #1 in all countries where Netflix reports its top 10, a first for any show in the streamer’s history.

NHL players will have Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews to thank for some big changes to their pre- and post-game dress code requirement. With a new collective bargaining agreement expected soon, one big change will see the league finally relaxing its strict dress code. For years, players had to wear suits to and from games, but under the new rules, that’s only required if a coach or GM says so. It’s a win for players like Matthews, who’s known not just for his skills, but for pushing hockey culture toward more personality and self-expression.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A new study finds that the best way to lose weight is to alternate between fasting and feasting.

Starbucks is trying to win back customers by making its stores cozy again. After removing 30,000 comfy seats nationally, blocking outlets, and turning stores into grab-and-go zones, many bailed — opting for local cafés or just brewing at home. Now, Starbucks is renovating 1,000 US locations this year, and plans to refresh all company-owned stores within 3 years. The new vibe is all soft lighting, plants, digital menus, and a mix of armchairs, booths, and laptop-friendly tables. Even COO Mike Grams admits this is a reaction to the company’s recent downturn, saying: “Maybe we lost our way a little bit”. Translation: Bring your laptop – and feel free to plug in again.

WEIRD NEWS

Norway’s national lottery has apologized after thousands of ticket-buyers were mistakenly told that they had won large sums in the Eurojackpot draw. Norsk Tipping receives the prize amounts from Germany in euros, then coverts them to Norwegian kroner. But during the conversion, an error occurred and winnings were multiplied by 100, rather than divided by 100, the company said. Norsk Tipping sent messages and push notifications to customers that showed the wrong, inflated winnings. Later, the company’s CEO issued an apology, saying: “I have received many messages from people who had managed to make plans for holidays, buying an apartment or renovating before they realized that the amount was wrong. To them I can only say: Sorry!”

SECRETS MEN DON’T TELL WOMEN:

❑ “When you send us selfies, we will probably save our favorite ones to the cloud.”

❑ “Yes, your friend is hot, and yes, sometimes hotter than you, but we really don’t care that much…We recognize they’re hot and move on. We picked you because we love you.”

❑ “The smell of my wife’s hair is the smell of home…That scent has become the ultimate comfort to me; it just makes me feel like whatever’s going on…it’s all gonna be OK”

❑ “Compliments, or acknowledgements of good doing, are things we will remember forever.”

❑ “We have the ability to shut our brains off. I mean flatlining off to the point where we think of absolutely nothing.”

❑ “Zero chance we want to go see what that sound was you heard in the middle of the night — because we are just as scared as you, but we do it anyways.”

❑ “We didn’t really get that spider, and it fell somewhere onto the bed.”

❑ “Y’all fart in your sleep.”
