SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

So tell me: What do you think of people who are rich? Like, Bezos, Zuckerberg – or Musk-rich? It probably depends on where you’re from. A new study found that people in wealthier, more equal countries are more likely to view excessive personal wealth as morally wrong. Researchers from the University of Southern California and UMass Amherst surveyed over 4,300 people across 20 countries. Surprisingly, nations with struggling economies were less likely to judge the ultra-rich harshly — often seeing wealth as a sign of hope or progress. On the other hand, those in countries where their basic needs are met tend to scrutinize extreme wealth more. That’s a nice way of saying they don’t think that the ultra-rich should be so darn rich. The study also found that societies that encourage moral values like fairness and “purity” tend to harbor more negative views toward those with vast fortunes. And that might be where the term “filthy rich” came from.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Jennette McCurdy’s acclaimed memoir “I’m Glad My Mom Died” will receive a series adaptation from Apple TV+. The 10-episode dramedy will star Jennifer Aniston in a role modeled after McCurdy’s mother. In the book, the former “iCarly” actress shares the story of the emotional and psychological trauma she endured as a result of her mother, Debra McCurdy, and a figure she refers to only as “The Creator” — widely believed to be Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider. McCurdy also details her battles with eating disorders and underage alcohol use.

There’s a new game show in play this fall. “Scrambled Up” will premiere September 8 in national syndication, hosted by comic and actor Michael Yo. In Scrambled Up, 4 contestants solve jumbled-up words and phrases that unscramble before their eyes. As the tiles unscramble, the clues get easier. The first player to buzz in with the right answer has a shot at walking away with the $10,000 grand prize.

The Cat is back where he belongs: in animation. A new trailer has dropped for next year’s animated film “The Cat in the Hat”. Starring Bill Hader, the movie introduces new characters into Dr. Seuss’s world via different styles of animation, and “the cat has been reimagined in a way that’s hilarious and unlike anything you’ve seen before,” Hader says in the clip. For Audrey Stone Geisel, the widow of Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel, the new adaptation based on the children’s book of the same name, would have been a welcome one, as she was less than pleased with 2003’s live-action “The Cat in the Hat” movie starring Mike Myers. Rob McElhenney‘s wife, Kaitlin Olson, addressed his name change to Rob Mac and revealed their children’s reaction in an interview. McElhenney recently signed the paperwork to initiate the name change process. Olson said: “The kids are really not happy about it, because they have that last name. And so do I, legally.” In the same interview, McElhenney explained the reason for his name change: Not only do people mispronounce his name “all the time”, his company, More Better Industries, is planning to expand to other countries, where his last name would be “even harder to pronounce.”

DID YA KNOW!?

If you’re headed out to watch a movie at an AMC theater, don’t rush. That 7:00pm showing likely won’t start until 7:25 or even 7:30. AMC just added a notice on its site confirming it has signed a deal with National CineMedia to show an additional up to 5 minutes of commercials “after a movie’s official start time,” and an additional 30-to-60-second “Platinum Spot” that plays before the last one or 2 trailers. So grab some popcorn, hit the bathroom, or scroll your phone guilt-free – you’ve got time. Why the change? Money, of course.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A report says that up to 50% of doctors turn to Wikipedia to look up medical information.

It turns out die-hard hockey fans don’t just watch the game – they actually feel it in their brains at a biological level. Canadian researchers strapped portable brain scanners onto superfans – and to casual viewers alike, then played clips from a hockey British hockey game. Why British? No hometown bias. Here’s what they found: passionate fans showed waaay more brain activity, especially in areas linked to personal meaning and evaluation. Casual fans perked up during obvious times, such as goals, but superfans lit up during subtler plays—like offensive face-offs—and other moments that require actual hockey IQ. The key brain region? The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. That’s the part that says, “This matters to me.” It was found that even early in the game, fans were already locked in, mentally dissecting strategy. The moral of the story? True fandom doesn’t just live in the heart—it’s wired straight into the brain.

WEIRD NEWS

Taking your cat for a walk isn’t as unusual as it used to be. More and more pet owners are embracing leashes and harnesses made specifically for cats, giving their feline friends safe ways to explore the outdoors. In fact, one Vancouver-based pet company says cat harnesses now outsell dog versions. “Adventure cat” gear is especially popular in urban areas, where apartment living means less opportunity for pets to roam. With the right harness, owners can bring their cats along for picnics, hikes — or even just a stroll around the block. RC Pets has sold nearly 500,000 of its “Adventure Kitty Harnesses” across North America, and demand keeps growing. Those who know say that training your cat to walk on a leash works best when they are young, but with patience, even older cats can learn. The B.C. SPCA offers helpful tips for getting started.
