SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Forget the scale – a simple waistline measurement might say more about your future health than your weight ever could. A new study of nearly 11,000 people found that larger waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios were strong signs of trouble ahead, especially when it comes to mobility and strength. People with extra belly fat had a harder time with a simple “chair test” — standing up and sitting down 5 times — which signals how well your body may age. Even after accounting for diet, smoking, and exercise, the connection held. The most telling number? Waist-to-height ratio. The Italian researchers say that if your waist is more than half your height, it might be time for action. Unlike your genes, your waist size is something you can control — making it one of the best tools for predicting how well you’ll move, function, and stay independent as you get older.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ‘KRYPTO’ (Superman’s dog):
‘Krypto’ is a CGI flying white mutt who dons a red cape to match the Man of Steel’s in the new “Superman” movie. Here are some surprising and sweet things to know about the furry scene stealer – who first appeared in DC Comics in 1955 . . .
❑ James Gunn’s actual rescue dog served as the 3D model for Krypto: The director told The New York Times that his greyish pup, named ‘Ozu”, became the physical model for the computer-generated super-pet.
❑ Krypto isn’t really a “good dog” – but that’s not a bad thing: Ozu “came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings,” Gunn wrote on social media. He also said that at first, his dog “was problematic to say the least.” Krypto maintains the decidedly unruly nature of the dog upon which he is based, a funny foil to Superman’s (David Corenswet) kind and composed comportment. (So, just like many other actors, he has main character energy and behavioral issues!)
❑ This isn’t the last time we’ll be seeing Krypto on the big screen: Near the end of the film, we learn that Superman’s cousin ‘Supergirl’ (played by “Sirens” star Milly Alcock) is the actual owner of Krypto. Alcock is set to star in a “Supergirl” film out next year. And we’re willing to bet that Krypto will be along for the ride. (
DID YA KNOW!?
A lightning bolt is five times hotter than the surface of the Sun. The charge carried by a bolt of lightning is so intense that it has a temperature of 30,000°C (54,000°F).

OF THE DAY
A study just came out that found that breast implants can save your life if you’re shot in the chest.
Wegmans is rolling out some high-tech help for your grocery run. At 4 stores in upstate New York, the grocery chain is testing AI-powered “Caper Carts” from Instacart. They are smart shopping carts that scan items as you toss them in, tracking your spending in real time – and they even let you pay right from the cart. That means no more checkout lines or end-of-trip sticker shock. The carts use cameras, sensors, and a built-in screen to make shopping faster and easier. Just log in with your Shoppers Club account and start bagging as you go. It’s like having a self-checkout lane that follows you around the store.

WEIRD NEWS
A fireman rescues a squirrel from a tree. That’s what happened when Douglas the pet squirrel got himself stuck 25 feet up, prompting a full response from the Big White Fire Department in British Columbia. Douglas, raised by local resident Kelly Blair after being found injured as a baby, had never been much of a climber. In fact, the little guy couldn’t even jump properly. So imagine her surprise when, mid-walk, Douglas launched himself into a tree and just… kept right on climbing. After failed ladder rescue attempts, Blair called in the pros. A firefighter climbed up — and Douglas casually leapt onto his shoulder like it was totally normal.
