SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Is simple living really the key to a happier life? A University of Otago study of over 1,600 New Zealanders found that, actually, the biggest happiness boost from “voluntary simplicity” comes not from owning less, but from beneficence. That means sharing time, skills, and resources with others, and building community. While decluttering, conserving resources, and buying local all contribute to a simpler lifestyle, these had weaker direct effects on well-being. The research suggests both consumer culture and minimalism often overlook the key role of social connection. Activities like joining community gardens, skill-sharing, and collaborative consumption were linked most strongly to mental health benefits and life satisfaction. In short, living simply works best when it’s paired with meaningful community ties—not just a tidy home. Women saw stronger benefits than men, while age and income didn’t significantly change results.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Charlie Sheen‘s infamous 2011 drug-fueled meltdown that led to his firing from “Two and a Half Men” is the stuff of Hollywood legend. Now Netflix has revealed the first trailer for a tell-all documentary, featuring interviews with Sheen and many of his family and friends. Those include Denise Richards, Heidi Fleiss, Jon Cryer, Sean Penn, Ramon Estevez, Brooke Mueller and Chris Tucker, as well as Sheen’s former drug dealer. Notably, Two and a Half Men executive producer Chuck Lorre, who was on the receiving end of many of Sheen’s attacks, is also among the interviewees. The 2-part miniseries “Charlie Sheen” premieres Sept. 10. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3457txxm
Netflix has rounded out the cast of Emmy winner Dan Levy‘s upcoming 8-part family crime comedy series “Big Mistakes” as production gets underway in New Jersey. Created and executive produced by Levy and Rachel Sennott, Big Mistakes centers on 2 deeply incapable siblings who are blackmailed into the world of organized crime. In addition to starring, Levy serves as creator, showrunner and executive producer. No premiere date has been announced.
Seth Rogen recently appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” and wrestled with the prospect of making a sequel to “Pineapple Express,” his beloved 2008 stoner comedy that grossed more than $100 million. When asked about it, Rogan replied: “Maybe. We can probably sell it to streaming or something… There could be [big demand].” But he also said: “I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.” A Pineapple Express sequel could also depend on Rogen and James Franco’s relationship. The former collaborators are apparently no longer friends.
A brain, a jock, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal will return to theaters in September when the John Hughes classic “The Breakfast Club” celebrates its 40th anniversary with a re-release. The 1985 blockbuster, about a group of suburban Chicago high school misfits who are forced to spend detention together, will hit theaters nationwide on Sept. 7 and Sept. 10. Earlier this year, all 5 of the castmates reunited publicly for the first time since the film’s 1985 release to discuss the movie’s 40th anniversary at the C2E2 convention in Chicago.
DID YA KNOW!?
You can yo-yo in space. In 2012, NASA astronaut Don Pettit took a yo-yo on board the International Space Station and demonstrated several tricks. It works because a yo-yo mainly relies on the laws of conservation of angular momentum to perform tricks, which, provided you keep the string taut, apply in microgravity too.

OF THE DAY
A girl was arrested after she punched a police horse while deputies were trying to break up a fight.
A brave dog who battled a bull – and lost a tooth after being kicked – is the 2025 “Hambone Award” winner. The Insurance company Nationwide hands out the award to celebrate the most unusual pet insurance claims of the year. The Hambone Award is named in honor of a dog who ate an entire holiday ham while stuck in a refrigerator. This year’s winner, Ziya, a Belgian Malinois from northern California, found himself in the middle of a real-life bullfight (minus the red cape). During a routine stroll with his pet parents, they encountered a loose, angry bull. Without hesitation, Ziya leapt into action, placing himself between the bull and his owners. While his owners escaped to safety, the bull kicked Ziya in the jaw, dislodging a tooth and sending him to the emergency vet. Ziya made a full recovery. The runners-up were:
• Duke, a lab-mix from Ohio, who swallowed an entire spatula head after licking off some peanut butter while he was staying at his dog sitter’s house.
• Foxtrot, a Great Dane in Texas, who stole a full turkey leg right out of the tongs in her owner’s hand the day after Thanksgiving — and swallowed it whole.

WEIRD NEWS
If tomatoes are a fruit, is ketchup a smoothie? Heinz and Smoothie King teamed up to answer that age-old joke with a real product: the Heinz Tomato Ketchup Smoothie. You heard that right — The Heinz tomato Ketchup Smoothie. It launched this week in select U.S. cities. The limited-edition smoothie blends Heinz Simply Ketchup with açai sorbet, apple juice, strawberries, and raspberries — promising a sweet, fruity base with a tangy tomato finish. Despite initial skepticism, one reviewer said the surprising result is a refreshingly balanced drink that tastes more like berries with a hint of tomato than straight-up ketchup. In short: weird idea, unexpectedly tasty execution.
