SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Before making a major decision, many people say they’d like to “sleep on it” first. Well, according to science, that’s not just procrastination – it’s a good idea. A new study in PLOS Biology found that short naps—especially those reaching deep sleep—can boost creative problem-solving. In one test, 86% of nappers who hit “N2” sleep (the second stage of non-REM sleep), had an “aha” moment after just 20 minutes. Researchers believe this deeper sleep stage may help the brain reorganize and strengthen important connections, clearing mental clutter. Experts say the ideal nap length is 20-30 minutes, depending on how fast you fall asleep. While a full night’s sleep has benefits too, this research focused on quick naps. Sleep doesn’t just rest the brain—it sharpens it, improves memory, reduces emotional reactivity, and supports better decisions. So next time you’re stuck, a power nap might be your smartest move.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Pamela Anderson is doubling down on her claim that Sylvester Stallone once offered her a Porsche and a condo in exchange for being his “No. 1 girl.” During her visit to “Watch What Happens Live”, she was asked to share her thoughts on Stallone denying that he’d ever made such an offer to her following the release of her 2023 documentary “Pamela, a Love Story”. Anderson’s response: “Well, how could you make that up?…I mean, that was pretty specific.” Stallone’s rep later again denied that the actor made the offer.

NBC has renewed the long-running unscripted series “American Ninja Warrior” for Season 18. Hosts Matt Iseman, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Zuri Hall return to lead the series, which will film this fall in Las Vegas. The action competition is one of NBC’s most reliable unscripted franchises, alongside “America’s Got Talent”, which is currently airing Season 20, and “The Voice”, which was just renewed for Season 29.

Pottermore Publishing and Audible have unveiled the cast lineup for “Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions”. “House” star Hugh Laurie is set to voice ‘Albus Dumdledore’, Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession”) will portray ‘Lord Voldemort’, Riz Amed (“The Phonenician Scheme”) voices ‘Professor Snape’, and Michelle Gomez (“Doctor Who”) plays ‘Professor McGonagall’. Cush Jumbo (“The Good Fight”) will narrate. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” will be the first to be released, launching November 4 on Audible.

DID YA KNOW!?

Football teams wearing red kits play better. The colour of your clothes can affect how you’re perceived by others and change how you feel. A review of football matches in the last 55 years, for example, showed that teams wearing a red kit consistently played better in home matches than teams in any other colour.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

The Lakers’ Lindsey Harding has made history as the only female to be named head coach of a Summer D-League.

Jen Pawol made history over the weekend as the first female umpire to officiate a regular-season MLB game, during the Marlins-Braves series. The 48-year-old worked the series between the Marlins and Braves in Atlanta. That includes working as a base ump in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, and in Sunday’s series finale, behind home plate.

A&W has rolled out its new Ice Cream Sundae soda, a sweet, fizzy throwback that tastes like you’re pulling up a stool at an old-school ice cream counter. The limited-edition soda, available in cans, hits all the classic components of a sundae: vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, even a hint of sprinkles, and a cherry on top. A&W Ice Cream Sundae is available in regular and zero-sugar versions, and is sold in 12-packs.

WEIRD NEWS

A dog named Petunia won the so-called “title” of “World’s Ugliest Dog” at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California on Friday. Petunia, a 2-year-old hairless French bulldog mix, was described by owner Shannon Nyman of Eugene, Oregon, as a “world class snuggler.” Petunia and her human walked away with $5,000 and bragging rights. The contest has been taking place for nearly 50 years, and, according to organizers, is a “testament that the pedigree does not define the pet.” In addition, the contest is said to showcase the unique and offbeat beauty of dogs, highlighting pet rescue shelters and promoting the adoption of dogs of all ages and appearances—even the oldest and most unconventional. THE LIST

NOW BATTING: TODD BONZALES:

Baseball is known for having some of the most awesome names out there among its players. In the 1990s, a Japanese video game designer needed some American-sounding baseball player names. Here’s what he came up with…

Dean Wesrey, Mike Truk, Tony Smelrik, Bobson Dugnutt, Willie Dustice, Dwigt Rortugal, Todd Bonzales, Steve McDichael, Onson Sweemey, Daryl Archideld, Anatoli Smorin, Rey McSriff, Glenallen Mixon, Mario McRlwain, Jeromy Gride, Scott Dourque, Shown Furcotte.

NOW, here are some bona fide REAL names of MLB players from over the years (and we’re not including those with awesome nicknames, like Coco Crisp, Boog Powell, or Oil Can Boyd)…

❑ Madison Bumgarner – Sturdy, dramatic, sounds like a Civil War general and a mountain.

❑ Clayton Kershaw – Sounds like the lead in a gritty sports biopic.

❑ Max Scherzer – Intense, sharp, almost villainous.

❑ Noah Syndergaard – Biblical + Norse = epic.

❑ Hunter Pence – Sounds like he was born to hit doubles and lead a cavalry charge.

❑ Chase Utley – Has action-hero energy and rom-com charm.

❑ Blake Snell – Clean, modern, cool under pressure.

❑ Dante Bichette – Dashing, almost operatic.

❑ Byron Buxton – Rolls off the tongue with elite energy.

❑ Christian Yelich – Sharp and commanding.

❑ Felix Hernandez – Royalty vibes (which fits his “King Felix” nickname).

❑ Orlando Cabrera – Sounds like he should arrive in a Ferrari and hit a walk-off.

❑ Carlos Beltrán – Regal and classic.

❑ Zack Greinke – Just plain cool.

❑ Xander Bogaerts – Sci-fi energy; could be a Marvel villain or genius shortstop (or both).

❑ Chase Utley – Has action-hero energy and rom-com charm.

Blake Snell – Clean, modern, cool under pressure.
