THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

My husband has four grown children — one from his first marriage; three with his late wife. Talk about drama! Who talks to whom? Who can’t stand whom? Who gets annoyed when one of them comes to visit us? They could be BFFs today and tomorrow stab each other in the back. Social media has only made matters worse! Recently, my husband has been saying he’d like to see his four children and all his grandchildren together. Actually, his exact words were, “I guess the only time I’ll see all my kids together in one room is when they come to my funeral.” My husband has a milestone birthday approaching. I’ve been thinking about having a surprise birthday party for him at a restaurant and inviting all the kids and grandchildren. I’ve thought about texting or emailing all of them with a note letting them know their dad’s wishes and asking them to be civil to one another for a few hours for their dad. I also want them to know that if they cannot do that, they shouldn’t accept the invitation. How do I make that happen?

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Sooo…I hate to put you on the spot, but…Quick – what’s your partner’s favorite flower? According to a new survey, one in 4 of us don’t have a clue. The poll of 2,000 adults in the US found that just 24% of those who believe their partner has a fav flower are able to name it. Another 22% can’t even identify what it looks like. Still, flowers play a big role in relationships: nearly three-quarters (73%) said they’d accept them as an apology, while 29% would forgive a missed Valentine’s Day and 28% a forgotten birthday. A quarter said they receive flowers monthly, 24% a few times a year, and 19% … never. Some other interesting results:

76% were able to identify a sunflower, 68% a rose, 38% an orchid, and just 9% a identified a ranunculus

While roses remain a favorite for older generations, Gen Z showed a preference for tulips (21%) and sunflowers (11%). Millennials prefer sunflowers (12%) and lilies (7%).

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Hallmark’s upcoming 16th annual “Countdown to Christmas” programming will begin Oct. 17, with 24/7 holiday programming through the end of the year on the Hallmark Channel. Among this year’s projects are “Holiday Touchdown: A Bills Love Story”, which will feature Buffalo Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott and several Bills players after they’ve played their final season at Highmark Stadium. “A Grand Ole Opry Christmas” will also arrive, timed to the centennial of the show that made country music famous.

The “Superman” movie has flown onto HBO Max. The film made about $615M at the global box office this summer.

Colin Farrell accidentally dropped an F-bomb during an interview on the “Today” show with his “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” co-star Margot Robbie. While promoting their new film, Farrell and Robbie gushed to host Craig Melvin about their favorite on-set snack, a “crisp” or “chippy” sandwich. After taking a bite, Farrell said: “That’s not bad. Is that Tayto?…It is. I (bleeping) knew it!” The expletive language caught Robbie off guard, causing her to nudge him.

DID YA KNOW!?

A Virginia woman used CHAT GPT to pick her lottery numbers – and won $150,000. Carrie Edwards of Midlothian VA used the AI system to select her Sept. 8 Powerball numbers. She matched 4 numbers plus the Powerball, winning $50,000. And thanks to the Power Play option, her prize tripled to $150,000. But in another surprise twist, she plans to donate it all to 3 charities which are close to her heart. Why? She said: “I’ve been so blessed. And I want this to be an example.”

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 19% of adults would buy a used hat.

Two of the internet’s most notorious names are joining forces. LimeWire, once associated with pirated music downloads, has purchased the rights to the infamous Fyre Festival brand. The deal was sealed in September through an eBay auction, with LimeWire outbidding Ryan Reynolds’ creative agency and several other contenders. The final price came in at just over $245,000, a relatively modest sum for a name that still commands headlines years after its downfall. Fyre Festival captured attention in 2017, when luxury villas and gourmet catering in the Bahamas were promised, but disaster ensued, stranding festivalgoers, and causing the now-iconic cheese sandwich photo that went viral.

WEIRD NEWS

The 35th annual Ig Nobel Prizes were handed out in Boston on Thursday, celebrating quirky science that makes people laugh…before making them think. This year’s winners included researchers who found that painting cows with zebra stripes cut horsefly bites by nearly half, and that rainbow lizards in Togo prefer 4-cheese pizza. The literature prize went to William B. Bean for tracking the growth of his fingernail over 35 years, while the pediatrics honorees studied how garlic in a mother’s diet affects nursing infants. Other awards recognized studies on narcissists being told they’re intelligent, eating Teflon to feel full, alcohol’s effect on foreign language skills, smelly shoes, the effects of alcohol on the flight of bats, and pasta sauce physics. Experts say such curiosity-driven research, however odd, often lays the groundwork for major breakthroughs. As has become tradition at the irreverent event, the audience once again honored winners by throwing paper airplanes.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

61% of men have lied about liking THIS in order to fit in. What is it?

THE LIST

REALISTIC FALL BUCKET LIST:

• Buy a pumpkin to carve with your kids. Do the work for them.

• Get a caramel apple at the pumpkin patch shop, watch a bee land on it, immediately throw it in the trash.

• Try to make your own delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte at home. Dump it out because the recipe was a big fat liar, and go to Starbucks for “the real thing”.

• Paint your nails a nice fall shade of ‘Cocoa’ that actually makes it look like you stuck your fingers in poop.

• Get lost in a corn maze. Like, REALLY lost. Panic.

• Watch a spooky movie with your kids. Let them subsequently sleep in your bed for the next 2 weeks. Remind them witches aren’t real.

• Bake pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin roll, and pumpkin pie. Cry when you realize you’ve gained about 13 pounds.

• Hang a decorative wreath on your front door so you’ll have to use brute force to get it shut for the next 30 days.

• Pretend to smile with your family in a pile of leaves for a photo, knowing you just threatened to sell the on the black market if they didn’t cooperate.

Make warm apple cider to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon, then remember cider is gross and you hate it.
