SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

It turns out that when you’re on vacation, you’re also on vacation from the usual “rules”. According to a new survey, for 56% of us, when you’re away from home, budgets don’t exist. Also, calories don’t count (47%), and there’s zero pressure to watch the news or check a news app (32%). Sixty-seven percent said they eat out for every single meal when on a trip, and 23% said dessert with every meal is the norm. In addition, more than half of travelers snack more than usual when away from home. While roughly half aim to be frugal, 54% admit they often overspend. It’s not just food and finances that take a vacation. One in 5 avoid social media entirely, most feel free to ignore non-urgent messages, and one-third said they completely disconnect.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The 77th Primetime Emmys may not have been “a big one like 75 or 80,” as host Nate Bargatze put it during Sunday’s ceremony, but it was the most-watched in years. Back on its regular annual schedule, after pulling double-duty last year thanks to the strike-delayed January ceremony, the Emmys drew 7.42M viewers across CBS and Paramount+, a 4-year high. There’s no doubt the show has struggled in recent years, and perhaps the new numbers are a sign of the times, as the rest of the TV landscape also recalibrated.

Disney’s “Zootopia 2” is expanding. Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Macaulay Culkin and Brenda Song have joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios. The original “Zootopia”, released in 2016, was a box office smash, making more than $1 billion. It also won the Best Animated Feature Oscar and has inspired a series of Disney+ shorts and an entire theme park at Shanghai Disneyland. “Zootopia 2” hits theaters on Nov. 26.

Bobby Bones has admitted that he “cheated” on “Dancing With the Stars” before he won the competition show during season 27 in 2018. In a recent podcast appearance, Bones pointed out that they “give you a limited amount of time with your partner. Like, 4 hours a day.” He explained that he and his partner, Sharna Burgess, “would do [their] 4″ hours of rehearsal a day, but he would record the session, “rent a studio myself and train myself.” Bones explained that he “Like, illegally spent time over … because I was so far behind everybody else.”

DID YA KNOW!?

The iPhone was not the first phone with a capacitive touch-screen. It was actually a Prada phone (yes, as in the design house “Prada”), released in collaboration with LG. The phone became available in January 2007, a few days before Steve Jobs made his announcement of the iPhone. Designers releasing cell phones was a thing in the very early 2000s, most notably Kimora Lee Simmons’s Baby Phat phone with Motorola, and Versace’s gold flip phone with Nokia.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 35% of adults report getting less than 7 hours of sleep.

Got your Halloween pumpkin yet? No? Well, luckily for you, “porch pumpkin” businesses are all the rage this season. In several US states, you can pay someone a few hundred bucks to set up gourds and hay bales on your stoop for you. An Axios report calls it “the latest evolution of outsourcing holiday chores.” Across the country, “pumpkin concierges” are popping up, offering to deliver, arrange, and even haul away seasonal gourds for hundreds (or even over a thousand) dollars. From Minneapolis to Nashville to California, clients can order anything from modest clusters with cornstalk add-ons to sweeping displays of cascading pumpkins, hay bales, and skeletons. McCaulley Patterson, who decks out porches and decks for busy families and small businesses, said her goal is “to make things uniquely fabulous and easy”. In Texas, one pumpkin entrepreneur reports 6-figure earnings, while in Richmond VA, packages run as high as $1,275.

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ In 2016, Mozart sold more CDs than Adele, Drake, and Beyonce combined.

✓ Pro baseball players have an average visual acuity of 20/12, much better than 20/20, which is considered “good”.

✓ Modern squirrels are almost identical to their ancestors from 35 million years ago.

✓ Peaches, avocados, cashews and bananas are all pollinated by bats.

The word “broadcast” originally referred to farmers casting (or scattering) seeds over a broad area.

WEIRD NEWS

A man in Prince George, BC turned heads when he was pulled over driving a child-size pink Barbie Jeep down a busy road. Photos show Kasper Lincoln, wearing aviators, slowly cruising near construction before police arrested him. Lincoln admits he’d had drinks and blew over the legal limit, but insists he wasn’t being reckless, and “was using the hand signals and everything”. Police nearly impounded the toy Jeep, but friends persuaded them to let him take it home. Lincoln faces a DUI charge, but says he’s embracing the memes.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

A survey shows that 80% of us were not allowed to do THIS while in high school. What is it?

Answer: Swear in front of our parents

HEIDI HAS SOMETHING SPECIAL

(FROM HEIDI)

THE LIST

MYTH-CONCEPTIONS:

Things that many people believe, that simply aren’t true…

Myth: In 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American man to play Major League Baseball.

Fact: In 1879, the Providence Grays of the National League signed African American William Edward White. He played in one game.

Myth: Polaris, the North Star, is a star.

Fact: The famous navigational reference point looks like a single source of light to the human eye, 433 light years away. But Polaris is a triple star system, comprised of 3 gravitationally bonded stars.

Myth: Possums pretend to be dead in order to trick predators into leaving them alone.

Fact: “Playing possum” isn’t voluntary. When a predator comes near, the animals go into shock, then faint. Later, they wake up and come out of their comatose state.

Myth: Warthogs are covered in warts.

Fact: Warts are caused by a virus. Warthogs just have bumpy, thick, roughly textured skin. It protects them from damage during fights with other animals.
