SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Is it wrong to date a co-worker? Not necessarily. And that’s fortunate, because surveys in Canada, the US, and the U.K. show many couples first met on the job – and as many as one in 3 employees has been romantically involved with a colleague. The benefits can be real: stronger teamwork, better morale, and higher job satisfaction. But the risks are just as clear. Office relationships may trigger gossip, favoritism concerns, or blurred boundaries that harm reputations, careers, and in some cases lead to harassment claims. Those are some reasons why a 2023 management poll reported 82% of workers kept such relationships secret from employers. While most employers don’t ban consensual relationships outright, they often have policies requiring disclosure or limits on manager-subordinate pairings. If a workplace romantic relationship is something you’re considering, experts suggest these tips: reflect on your motivations, know your workplace rules, be transparent when necessary, set clear boundaries, and plan ahead…just in case things don’t last.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Warwick Davis has been revealed as the first actor from the “Harry Potter” film franchise to reprise their role in the upcoming HBO Original series. Davis will once again play ‘Professor Filius Flitwick’, a character he originated in the universe. He also starred as ‘Griphook’, a goblin employed at the Gringotts Wizarding Bank. On the small screen, Griphook will be brought to life by Leigh Gill. Additional cast members were also announced as part of the “Back to Hogwarts” celebration on Monday, including Elijah Oshin as ‘Dean Thomas’, Finn Stephens as ‘Vincent Crabbe’, and William Nash as ‘Gregory Goyle’.
Jude Law transforms into Vladimir Putin for Olivier Assayas’ “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” which had its world premiere Sunday at the Venice Film Festival. Law said earlier he does not fear repercussions for his portrayal, because he “felt safe in the hands of Olivier.” Law said of the film: “This is a story that was going to be told intelligently with nuance and consideration. We weren’t looking for controversy for controversy’s sake.” The adaptation of Giuliano da Empoli’s bestselling book is an account of the Russian president’s rise to power alongside a fictional adviser, played by Paul Dano.

A Japanese city is considering limiting residents to 2 hours of screen time per day. The non-binding ordinance proposed by the city of Toyoake would cap smartphone, tablet, and computer use at 2 hours daily outside of work or school. The measure also suggests children stop using devices by 9pm in elementary school and 10pm in middle school and beyond. Mayor Masafumi Koki emphasized the rule carries no penalties and is meant to curb health and lifestyle issues, as surveys show youth average 5 hours of screen use.

Adults who claim to remember previous lives have been found to also have unusually high levels of mental health disorders, according to new research from Brazil. The survey of 402 adults found that nearly half of those who reported past-life memories screened positive for common mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety, while almost 4 in 10 showed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. 71% reported childhood phobias, with most persisting into adulthood. Some linked those fears to how they believed they died in past lives.
The tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla brought in $39 million from internet domain sales last year, accounting for almost one-quarter of its total revenues. That’s because in the early internet days of the 1980s, Anguilla was awarded the country-specific website address of “.ai.” Now, as companies in the surging artificial intelligence field scoop up websites, they’re paying big bucks for addresses that end in “.ai.” As an example, HubSpot co-founder Dharmesh Shah paid a reported $700,000 to buy you.ai for a new venture. This year, the island expects to bring in nearly $49 million from its .ai online real estate.

Coffee for kids? That’s the idea behind “Kiid Coffee”, a new nutrient-packed, nearly caffeine-free blend created by David Sanborn and his 8-year-old son, Ethan. After debuting on “Shark Tank”, it sold out within hours. Kiid Coffee comes as a powdered mix you stir into milk or water. Each serving delivers fiber, antioxidants, and a blend of vitamins and minerals from calcium and magnesium to vitamins A, C, D3, and B12. Made with organic, water-decaffeinated coffee, it’s 99.9% caffeine-free, with less caffeine than a single Hershey’s Kiss. The idea behind Kiid Coffee is to let kids sip alongside their parents, minus the jitters.
