SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Your bathroom break might be doing more harm than good—if you bring your phone along. A new study in PLOS One found that adults who regularly scroll on smartphones while on the toilet spend longer sitting, and as a result, have a 46% higher risk of hemorrhoids. Researchers say it’s the prolonged sitting and poor posture — not straining — that inflates veins down there. About two-thirds of participants admitted to phone use in the bathroom, often losing track of time while scrolling. Experts recommend limiting toilet time to 3-5 minutes, and leaving your phone behind.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“The Walking Dead” fans have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to claim a piece of the iconic series and its vast universe. An auction features a collection of more than 1,000 lots encompassing the full scope of the franchise’s storytelling and production. For sale are several standout iconic pieces from The Walking Dead series, including ‘Daryl Dixon’s crossbow and his custom Triumph chopper, ‘Negan’s’ “Lucille” baseball bat, ‘Rick Grimes’’ sheriff hat and .357 Magnum, and ‘Michonne’s’ signature sheath and katana. The Walking Dead Universe Auction will be held October 6–November 1 at Heritage Auctions. Bidding is now open at www.HA.com

“The Graham Norton Show” has been recommissioned for 3 more series. The BBC, Norton, and So Television have struck a renewal deal, beginning with series 32, which will air in 2026. Norton said he’s “thrilled” the show will continue. The multi-award-winning chat show sees him interview A-list stars, and the program is one of the UK’s favourite shows. Upcoming guests on the current series include Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Farrell, Bruce Springsteen, Jeremy Allen White, and Jennifer Lawrence. It is available in North America on BBC America, BBC First, and AMC+.

DID YA KNOW!?

Giraffes hum to communicate with each other. It’s thought that the low-frequency humming could be a form of ‘contact call’ between individuals who have been separated from their herd, helping them to find each other in the dark. Some researchers think they sleep talk too.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Air Canada has just become the only major North American airline offering complimentary beer and wine in economy class across its entire network. Passengers in coach can now enjoy free beer and wine – and some pretty sweet snacks on every flight. Scott O’Leary, vice president at Air Canada, made the announcement last week, calling the move “part of our commitment to elevating the onboard experience”. Previously, the airline only served free alcohol and food to economy passengers on long-haul flights. O’Leary said the “upgrades offer something for everyone…so that our customers can sit back, relax and kick-start their travels no matter where they’re going.”

WEIRD NEWS

Maxwell House is getting a new name after 133 years: “Maxwell Apartment.” The coffee brand says the temporary rebrand reflects today’s reality, where nearly a third of Americans rent, rather than own their home. While the famous coffee blend – and its aroma — aren’t changing, Kraft Heinz says the move highlights how consumers are making “smart choices” to save money. The company is offering a 12-month so-called “lease” on Maxwell Apartment coffee: four 27-ounce canisters for $39.99, which is worth about $52. Their angle is to put the word out that brewing at home can save coffee lovers more than $1,000 a year, compared to cafĂ© visits.

THE LIST

LAUNDRY “DON’T” LIST:

How many of these laundry “don’ts” do you do?

Avoid Mixing Towels and Clothes – Towels shed lint and need more drying time, which can damage clothes.

Never Use Too Much Fabric Softener – It leaves residue that reduces absorbency and can irritate skin.

Do Not Skip Turning Clothes Inside Out – It protects colors and prints from fading and friction damage.

Avoid Washing Everything in Cold Water – Some fabrics and stains need warm or hot water to clean properly.

Never Skip the Lint Trap – A clogged one reduces efficiency and can be a fire hazard.

Do Not Overload the Washing Machine – That prevents clothes from getting fully cleaned and stresses the motor.

Avoid Using Excessive Detergent – That leaves buildup on fabric and inside the machine

Never Leave Wet Clothes in the Washer – They can smell musty and even grow mold within hours.

Avoid Using Hot Water on Delicates – Heat can shrink, warp, or weaken delicate fabrics.

Never Forget to Pre-Treat Stains – Once set by heat, stains become nearly impossible to remove.

Avoid Drying on High Heat – Excess heat shrinks clothes, melts elastic, and wears out fabrics faster.

Never Mix Lights and Darks – Dark dyes can bleed and ruin lighter fabrics.

Do Not Neglect Regular Washer Maintenance – A dirty washer grows mold and bacteria, making “clean” laundry smell bad.
