SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new survey suggests love may come with some extra pounds. Of 2,000 Americans in relationships, 79% admitted gaining weight since coupling up, averaging 36 pounds each (11.8kg)!!! Seventeen of those pounds are typically piled on in the first year. Men were more likely than women to report weight gain (69% vs. 45%). Common culprits taking the blame for weight gain included dining out (42%), frequent takeout (34%), and cozy nights in with drinks. But comfort itself also played a role: 64% said feeling secure in a relationship reduced pressure to maintain appearances. On average, respondents said they began to gain weight starting about 17 months in.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Matt Damon and his brother Kyle granted their late father Kent one of his dying wishes at the 2018 World Series. In the new ESPN documentary “Believers”, which covers Damon’s hometown Boston Red Sox and the club’s path to winning the 2004 World Series, the franchise’s first World Series victory in 86 years, Damon recalls that his dad asked that some of his ashes be spread at Boston’s Fenway Park before his death in 2017. Even though Kent was an amateur pitcher, Damon says that when he asked his dad if he wanted some of his ashes spread on the mound, he answered: “No. Put them in the seats. I never made it to the field.”

DID YA KNOW!?

The average dinosaur lifespan was surprisingly small. The Tyrannosaurus rex, for example, reached full size between 16-22 years old and lived up until 27-33. The largest dinosaurs such as the Brontosaurus and Diplodocus tended to live up to between 39-53 years old, maybe reaching the heights of 70.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 49% of in-person workers say they cry at work from time to time.

The World Health Organization warns of a global shortage of 4.5 million nurses by 2030, with many already experiencing burnout and high turnover. To ease the pressure, Foxconn has developed “Nurabot”, an AI-powered humanoid robot designed to handle repetitive or physically demanding tasks such as delivering medicine and guiding patients. Currently being tested at a Veterans Hospital in Taiwan, Nurabot can reduce nurses’ workloads by up to 30%, allowing them to focus on critical patient care. Foxconn stresses it’s not a replacement but a partner, with commercial launch expected early next year after promising trials.

WEIRD NEWS

A luxury hotel — for dogs? Traveling with pets just got easier for dog owners flying out of Rome’s Fiumicino International Airport. It recently opened “Dog Relais”…yep, a luxury hotel designed for 4-legged travelers. Staff can collect dogs directly from the terminal so owners can head to their flights stress-free. Rooms start at about US $47 and include private gardens, temperature-controlled floors, and soothing ambient music at night. Premium options include webcams, 24/7 videocalls, and even remote treat dispensers. Pups can also enjoy grooming, training, or indulgent extras like aromatherapy and massage cream for sore joints. The facility doubles as daycare for locals…and in August, all 40 rooms were filled. Airport officials say it’s a win-win for pets and their people.
