SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
If you’re an empty nester, how do you convince your kids to come home for the holidays? You promise to serve up the foods they love, of course. According to a new survey, more than half of parents of adult kids expect their children to visit this holiday season, traveling nearly 600 miles, on average, to get there. And most admit it’s surprisingly easy to convince their kids to visit…especially when food is involved. Favorite meals, snacks, and long-lost hometown hangouts top the request list, and mom and dad are eager to oblige, often planning weeks ahead to make sure everyone feels welcomed and well-fed. Here are some key findings from the survey of 1,000 empty-nesters…
• 54% plan to have their kids home for the holidays
• 87% of parents plan to cook kids’ favorite foods
• 26% entice kids with reminders of how nice home is
• 28% report kids make special requests for their visit
• 72% ask for favorite meals, 46% for snacks/drinks, 18% to visit old hangouts
• 16% of parents send leftovers home with their kids
• 9 in 10 expect their kids to bring others home with them, including children, their significant other, and even extended family members
• 4 in 5 go out of their way to ensure all visitors have something good to eat, no matter their preference
• On average, empty nesters plan to serve 3 different main dishes for their guests – the most popular being turkey (66%) and ham (52%)
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Robert Irwin paid homage to the “Dancing with the Stars” judges in an unexpected way. Less than 2 weeks before the Season 34 finale is set to air, he revealed that he named 3 baby birds after DWTS judges Bruno Tonioli, Derek Hough, and Carrie Ann Inaba. While speaking with “Good Morning America” at the “Zootopia 2” premiere, Irwin mentioned that his pro partner Witney Carson will be coming to Australia to meet her namesake, Witney the Wallaby. Next, he said there were “3 beautiful little goshawk chicks…rehabilitating at our wildlife hospital…so I named them Bruno, Derek, and Carrie Ann…it’s just kind of perfect, right?”
RenĂ©e Zellweger called the new statue of ‘Bridget Jones’ “adorable.” Speaking to BBC news as the statue celebrating the character she played for more than 20 years was unveiled in London’s Leicester Square, she also said the likeness is “much cuter than me”. Bridget Jones was created in 1996 by the author Helen Fielding, and first adapted for the big screen in 2001. The 4th film came out earlier this year. Speaking at the unveiling, Fielding wouldn’t rule out taking her story further, saying: “never say never”.
Greg Evigan, the actor beloved by a generation for “BJ and the Bear” and “My Two Dads”, has surprised fans with a sweeping new classical album recorded with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. “Greg Evigan with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra” features 8 orchestral compositions performed by the 65-piece ensemble, all originally written by Evigan on piano. His talents have always extended beyond TV: He began on Broadway in “Jesus Christ Superstar” in 1971, and starred as ‘Danny Zuko’ in “Grease on Broadway” in 1972 and 1973. DID YA KNOW!?
Did You Know... Thanksgiving 2025 is shaping up to be the priciest yet, with the average American spending about $952 for the holiday. Food dominates the expense list at $175 per household, with another $110 going toward beverages. People said they’re spending an average of $83 on holiday decorations, while miscellaneous expenses like replacing a broken appliance or buying a new outfit tack on another $291. Travel expenses average $293 for the two-thirds who said they plan to travel for the holiday. A third said they’re cutting their budgets by roughly 40%, opting for smaller gatherings, potlucks, or skipping travel altogether. Costs vary by generation, too: Boomers think hosts should pay, while Gen Z prefers splitting the bill.

A new report says airport vending machines have evolved far beyond dispensing coffee – or cramming electronic gadgets into metal boxes at the departure terminal. And by that, I mean that in 2009, iPod-stocked machines at Las Vegas’s McCarran Airport were pulling in up to $70,000 a month. But today, flyers can grab almost anything on the go. Farmer’s Fridge, launched in 2013, offers salads and sandwiches as an alternative to pricey departure gate dining, although its $7.50 options can be a bit skimpy. Uniqlo has machines that dispense thermal t-shirts and jackets for travelers who forgot to pack cold-weather essentials. Other airport vending machines offer everything from Kylie Lip Kits to BBQ rib sandwiches, diapers, Lego sets, and, at JFK, a full row of Hudson-run machines offer up Brookstone, Apple, Beats, and Bose products, Burt’s Bees chapstick and moisturizers, and customizable Build-A-Bear Workshop dolls.
All that scrolling and screen time is taking a toll – especially on your neck. And we’re not talking about straining your neck muscles, either. Dermatologists call it “tech neck,” a condition where repeated forward head posture while using phones or computers causes wrinkles, sagging, and lines at the front of the neck. The skin on the neck is thinner and more sensitive, making it prone to creases, even in younger patients. Experts recommend improving posture by holding screens at eye level, using sunscreen (SPF 30+), and keeping skin hydrated with moisturizers and antioxidants like vitamin C. Treatments such as laser, radiofrequency, chemical peels, and Botox can reduce existing lines. Blue light from screens may also accelerate aging, so protective measures can help delay signs of damage.

WEIRD NEWS
A prisoner in Australia is bringing a most unlikely legal fight to court: the right to eat vegemite. 54-year-old Andre McKechnie, who is serving a life sentence for murder, claims the state’s long-standing prison ban on the iconic yeast spread violates his human right to “enjoy his culture as an Australian.” Vegemite has been prohibited in Victorian prisons since 2006 because inmates once used it to mask drug odors, and its yeast content could be used to make alcohol. McKechnie is suing the Department of Justice and Corrections, seeking a declaration that denying Vegemite restricts his cultural rights and fails to provide adequate food. The case heads to trial next year. Most Australians revere Vegemite as an unfairly maligned culinary icon, and more than 80% of households have a jar in the pantry. It’s a favorite on breakfast toast and in cheese sandwiches, with most fans agreeing it’s best applied sparingly.
