SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Picture yourself being seated by the host at a restaurant…who promptly shows you to a table that you’re expected to share with someone you don’t even know. Are you OK with that? A new survey suggests Gen Z is redefining dining norms – and apparently doesn’t mind doing it shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers. Reservation platform Resy found that young adults are enthusiastically embracing communal dining, a trend many might think ended with college cafeterias. An eye-opening 90% of Gen Z respondents said they enjoy shared tables, compared with 60% of baby boomers. Among those who like it, 63% cited the appeal of meeting new friends…or even potential dates. The shift reflects a desire for offline connection in an increasingly digital world, with structured group settings feeling more comfortable than one-on-one invitations. Shared dishes are rising too, with 97% of Gen Z willing to split food – even with people they’ve just met.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“BarbieLand” is about to take up residence in London, in an immersive experience. Secret Cinema and TodayTix, in collaboration with Mattel and Warner Bros, are deep in negotiations to run Barbieland in the UK capital next summer for 8 weeks. Similar to the recent “Grease: The Immersive Movie Musical” experience, the Barbie pop-up will take Greta Gerwig‘s movie beyond the big screen for a series of events and promos, including theatrical performances, immersive sets where consumers can experience where BarbieLand stories take place, a BarbieLand Carnival, dancefloors, and themed food and drink.

Dwayne Johnson will be honored at the 8th American Black Film Festival Honors on Feb. 16. The Rock will receive the Entertainment Icon Award. In a statement, presenters Nice Crowds said: “Dwayne Johnson is the very definition of an entertainment icon, from his trailblazing career in sports entertainment to his extraordinary success in film and television, he has become one of the most influential and beloved figures in global culture.” As previously announced, Jennifer Hudson will receive the Renaissance Award.

“Brady Bunch” star Maureen McCormick has joined the cast of a celebrity table read of the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” — and she’s not the only cast member with a ‘Marcia’ past. McCormick, who played Marcia Brady on the show from 1969-74, will sit alongside Christine Taylor, who played the iconic character in The Brady Bunch movie series, for the 5th annual It’s a Wonderful Life Live Virtual Table Read, benefiting The Ed Asner Family Center. Other castmembers include Taylor’s husband Ben Stiller, as well as Michael Shannon, Tom Bergeron, Joe Mantegna, Robert Smigel, Martin Short, and more. It’ll stream on “Broadway Unlocked” December 14.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... The Shortest War in History Lasted 38 Minutes? The Anglo-Zanzibar War, fought between the United Kingdom and the Sultanate of Zanzibar on August 27, 1896, is considered the shortest war in history. The conflict lasted only 38 minutes, with the Sultan’s forces quickly surrendering after heavy bombardment from the British navy.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

The Great American Smokeout 2025 started last week!

One of the latest viral TikTok trends is “Goodnight bro,” when men call their male friends unexpectedly…just to say goodnight. And it’s a good thing. According to an article in Psychology Today, the gesture could lead to mental health benefits…both for the caller and the recipient. The trend breaks traditional norms that discourage emotional expression among men, offering a low-pressure way to show care and strengthen friendships. According to the article, increased social connection can support mental health, and may even play a role in suicide prevention, particularly as rates of male loneliness rise. Experts note the practice could be especially useful in high-stress professions like law enforcement, where stigma often prevents officers from seeking support. The calls act as informal “buddy checks,” fostering routine connection and early intervention.

WEIRD NEWS

Slovakia’s government has enacted a new law that has caught cyclists and scooter-riders “off-balance”: A speed limit of just 6 kph (3.7 mph) for the vehicles, beginning in January. Advocate Dan Koller argues the rule would mean “children will break the law every day”, as even toddlers routinely exceed that limit. Additionally, he points out that at that slow speed, it’s hard to maintain balance even for adult riders. The Slovakian parliament approved the measures “to improve safety”, saying that those who exceed the limit could be fined up to 100 euros (US $116). It is not yet clear how police will enforce the law, which also applies to roller-blades and skateboards.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

In a survey, it was found that 47% of women do THIS every day at work. What is it?
