THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I nearly gave up on people today. Today I went shopping. After leaving the Nothing's-a-Dollar Tree, I'm driving to my next spot, and the car behind me is gaining quick on me... like going 5 mph over the speed limit is still too slow (I only sped up to keep with the pace cars around me). Ahead of me a ways, a car turns in front of me, still very clear of me striking him, and as he's turning, he flips me the bird! What did I do?!? Next, I go to the grocery store. I didn't bring bags so I kept my shopping light. I had 4 items all together, 3 of them frozen. I got into what I thought was the checkout line (the ONLY one open with a live checker), because the people in front of me were proceeding to the checkout. After a couple of minutes, a guy standing in the aisle ahead of the checkout said the end of the "line" is back "there." I was standing where I was longer than this schmuck, and I had 4 items... these other people had full carts. Without saying a word, I put the frozen stuff back to the freezers (I'm not a jerk), and left the store. As I was leaving, I think he thought I was in line for the self checkouts, which I never use. Anyway, I wasn't having none of that. I bought the same stuff plus more at a different grocery store. I blame every single chain store for not having more checkouts with people ringing up items open instead of stupid self-checkouts. And to the guy who turned in front of me and flipped me off, have a better day. No question really, just frustrated at people. What do you do?!

A new study from the University of Sydney and Universidad Europea suggests that how you walk may be as important as how much. Tracking people over 8 years, researchers found that those who took longer walks – 10 to 15 minutes or more at a time – had a lower risk of heart disease and death, even if they took fewer total steps. The benefit was clear even among those walking under 5,000 steps a day. Setting aside time for a longer, continuous walk appears to strengthen the heart more effectively than short bursts. Experts say small tweaks to walking habits could deliver big heart health gains.

Sydney Sweeney is shrugging off the dismal box office start of “Christy,” a biographical drama in which she portrays the trailblazing boxer ‘Christy Martin’. The R-rated film was rejected with a weekend gross of just $1.3 million, one of the worst starts ever for a movie that was released in more than 2,000 North American theaters. Sweeney captioned a long IG post with the words: “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2pvsf8h3
After years of telling us to Netflix and chill, the streaming giant now wants you to get out of the living room and visit them at the local mall. The company that upended the TV landscape has unveiled its first entry into the “experiential” business, where consumers can wander through interactive game rooms and load up on food and drink inspired by their favorite Netflix hits. The first Netflix House, a 100,000-square-foot space in the King of Prussia Mall, near Philadelphia, opened yesterday.
Warner Bros. is officially reviving the “Gremlins” franchise, with a new installment set to barrel into theaters in November 2027. The original Gremlins, which famously led to the creation of the PG-13 rating, was released in 1984. The horror-comedy follows a boy named ‘Billy’ who receives a cute, furry creature called a ‘Mogwai’ as a pet. Billy is warned to never expose the animal to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight. When those rules are broken, the gremlin spawns more of its kind — and end up wreaking havoc on Billy’s hometown during Christmas. Gremlins was a box office hit, netting $212 million dollars worldwide.
DID YA KNOW!?
Did You Know... A Day on Venus Is Longer Than a Year on Venus? Venus has an extremely slow rotation, taking about 243 Earth days to complete one full rotation on its axis. However, its orbit around the Sun only takes about 225 Earth days. This means that a day on Venus lasts longer than a year on Venus, making its timekeeping quite bizarre!

Canadian movie theater operator Cineplex has launched “Monday Surprise Premieres,” offering discounted “mystery” screenings of brand-new, unreleased films. Moviegoers don’t learn what movie they’ll be watching until the lights go down. Tickets cost $8.99, just over half the cost of a regular movie ticket. Retail analyst Bruce Winder says the idea taps into the “surprise and delight effect,” though he’s unsure it will be a success. Cineplex joins others that have tested similar concepts, including Landmark Cinemas and TIFF’s “Secret Movie Club.” The event arrives as the theatre industry continues to recover from pandemic disruptions, with revenues rising…but still below pre-2020 highs. Streaming habits remain a challenge, though hits like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” show that audiences will still turn out for the right movie. But will they turn out if they don’t know what movie they’re going to see?

WEIRD NEWS
I really wish we had this story in time for Halloween, but nonetheless…A Hopkinsville KY woman received a shocking delivery Wednesday when she opened a package expecting medicine…but instead found human body parts. Christian County Coroner Scott Daniel confirmed that arms and fingers, used for “medical training,” were accidentally delivered to the home instead of the woman’s medication order. The coroner retrieved the misdelivered body parts and transported them to the morgue, where they were returned to the courier for delivery to their intended destination. Daniel confirmed that body parts are sometimes shipped for transplants and research purposes.

For many, the darker days and colder weather of fall and winter takes a toll on their mental health. Seasonal depression can set in, bringing down our mood and energy, and making us want to retreat inside. But experts say that reconnecting with the outdoors, even when it’s cold outside, could be the key to supporting your well-being. Research shows nature improves mood, sleep, and community connection. Experts recommend these strategies to stay connected with nature through winter…
1. Turn discomfort into opportunity
Dress appropriately and embrace outdoor sensations, rather than avoiding them. This could mean “layering up”. There’s no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!
2. Tune into your senses
Observe sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations to feel grounded and present. This can make you feel more alert, more alive…and often more relaxed.
3. Open up to awe
Look for moments of wonder: stars, branches, birds. Because nearby nature can spark amazement.
4. Take your thoughts for a walk
Walking outdoors helps creativity and gives mental space; movement frees up thinking. Let your mind wander, as you wander outside.
5. Maintain connection
Go outside with others; social connection plus nature boosts mood and resilience.
The bottom line:
Don’t wait until you “feel ready” – just step outside. Any small action can help shift your mood.
