SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Humans touch their faces up to 800 times a day – usually without realizing it. Now, researchers from the University of Houston and Virginia Tech say those unconscious gestures may reveal when we’re stressed. Analyzing 170 hours of footage from 10 studies, they used AI and thermal imaging to track every touch, and measured subtle signs of perspiration linked to stress. The results: people who frequently touched their chin, cheeks, and nose – the so-called “T-zone” – showed stronger physiological stress responses. These self-soothing gestures, also seen in primates, may help calm the nervous system. Because face-touching is easy to observe, scientists think it could one day be used to monitor workplace stress in real time.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
‘Kevin McCallister’ is back, but his hijinks have matured. “Home Alone” star Macaulay Culkin reprises his role as the movie’s scheming protagonist, now all grown up in Home Instead’s new holiday ad: “Home But Not Alone”. But instead of defending his house against a pair of incompetent burglars, Kevin’s new goal is protecting his aging mother from everyday dangers, which involves bubble wrapping the house, pouring salt on the icy steps, eliminating fire hazards, and nailing the carpet to the floor. The ad’s emotional center comes when ‘Old Man Marley’s’ granddaughter appears with his shovel in hand, carrying his lesson forward that fear shouldn’t stop families from having the conversations that matter most. DID YA KNOW!?
Did You Know... Sighing is good for your health, according to a new study in Science Advances. It found that sighing offers real physical benefits beyond emotional relief. Deep breaths and long exhales help lower stress, improve mood…and keep lungs healthy. Each sigh expands the lungs, reopens tiny air sacs, and reduces surface tension to keep tissues moist. In contrast, constant shallow breathing can make breathing harder with age. So go ahead – that sigh might actually help you feel…and breathe better.

Dentists may soon have a game-changing alternative to implants: lab-grown biological teeth. A CNN report says researchers worldwide are making major progress, including new breakthroughs this year. At King’s College London, a team developed an improved hydrogel “scaffold” that mimics the mouth’s natural environment, allowing tooth-forming cells to grow more realistically. That’s a key step toward replacing mouse cells with human ones. In Japan, scientists have begun human trials of a drug that can regrow teeth, while teams at Tufts and the University of Washington are creating tooth structures and stem cells from human tissues. And in late 2024, a team at the School of Dental Medicine of Tufts University grew human-like teeth – created from human and pig cells – in pigs. Experts say true biological tooth replacement could become reality within the next decade.

WEIRD NEWS
As more people worry about their environmental footprint in both life and death, one business is offering a unique alternative to traditional burials – coffins and urns made of mushrooms. Mount Pleasant Group, which provides funeral and cremation services in the Greater Toronto Area, is offering up the biodegradable products – called the Living Cocoon and EarthRise – which are formed from mushroom roots (mycelium) and hemp fibres. They grow into sturdy shapes within 7 days, and break down fully in the soil in about 45 days, returning nutrients to the earth. Research shows 50% of people want greener funeral choices. And the company believes mushroom caskets, using no wood, metals or chemicals, represent a “new era” of sustainable memorials that reduce environmental impact, while honoring loved ones.
