SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

For years, experts have warned that using phones before bed harms sleep, mainly due to blue light disrupting melatonin. But a new study from Toronto Metropolitan University and Université Laval suggests the issue isn’t quite so simple. In surveying over 1,000 adults, researchers found similar sleep quality between people who used screens nightly and those who didn’t. And surprisingly, the WORST sleep was experienced by those who used their phones only a few nights a week. The researchers argue that earlier research often used unrealistic lab conditions and focused on younger, more light-sensitive subjects. They feel that what exactly you do on your phone matters as much as the light. Specifically, content that’s emotional, stressful, or hard to stop engaging with is most likely to negatively affect your sleep.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

It looks like Kim Kardashian got the last laugh in the bidding war over the Bible her late father Robert Kardashian gave to O.J. Simpson. She revealed on this week’s “The Kardashians” episode she anonymously bid $80,000 for the Bible her dad gifted to O.J. following the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. She indicated it was special, because it was her dad’s personal scripture, and has his name etched in gold lettering on the front, plus a handwritten note from him.

Corey Feldman claims he experienced a “toxic” environment behind-the-scenes on “Dancing with the Stars”. In a preview for an episode of the “Gurvey’s Law” radio show, he said that his time on the dance competition show was not without drama. Quote: “There was a lot of stupidity in the mudslinging that went on behind the scenes.” Feldman went into more detail, saying: “On the set everybody gets along”, but the “BS that people throw around that show, I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s the worst, like, most toxic.” The former child star, who was paired with pro dancer Jenna Johnson, was sent home during week two’s double elimination.

Years of unprecedented secrecy, a hard to explain premise and a title many have to look up in the dictionary did not hamper “Pluribus‘” launch as Apple TV‘s most viewed drama of all time. The streamer said the series from “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan broke the record previously held by “Severance” Season 2 for the biggest global drama series launch across Apple TV’s more than 100 territories. The genre-bending sci-fi drama follows the most miserable person on Earth, ‘Carol Sturka’ (Rhea Seehorn), who must save the world from happiness.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... You Can’t Hum While Holding Your Nose? Try it! If you pinch your nose shut while trying to hum, you’ll quickly find that it’s impossible. That’s because humming relies on air passing through your nose to create sound. When your nostrils are blocked, the air has nowhere to go, and you can’t produce a hum.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels just turned 81.

Believe it or not, the next trendy pet in North America may be…raccoons! A new study found that not only are they becoming more comfortable in the presence of humans, they’re also getting…cuter. The analysis of nearly 20,000 photos found urban raccoons have shorter snouts than rural ones. That’s a change linked to early domestication, similar to evolution once observed in dogs and cats. Raccoons’ growing comfort around people is driven largely by trash, which provides easy food, but requires they be bold enough to forage without becoming threatening. This shift may be reducing their natural flight response and softening their features. These changes are consistent with “domestication syndrome,” which includes smaller skulls, floppier ears, softer features, white patches on fur, and tamer behavior. With raccoons thriving in cities, the process of widespread raccoon domestication may start naturally, not through human breeding.

WEIRD NEWS

A museum in Taiwan has apologized after a volunteer accidentally destroyed a piece of artwork by cleaning it, mistaking it for a dusty mirror. The piece, Inverted Syntax 16, featured a mirror covered with 40 years’ worth of accumulated dust, representing middle-class cultural awareness. Believing it looked…well, dusty, the volunteer wiped it down with toilet paper, causing irreversible damage. The Keelung Museum of Art is now in discussions with the artist about compensation. Similar incidents have happened before: last year, another museum discarded an artwork of crushed beer cans, assuming they were trash. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/29tuprhk
