SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
You might be as happy as I am to learn that the…um…extra padding we carry around might actually be good for something. A new study suggests not all belly fat is harmful, and some types may help the body fight infection and inflammation. By analyzing 5 types of abdominal fat in people with severe obesity, researchers at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute discovered that fat near the colon contains large numbers of immune cells. Lab tests suggest this tissue can respond to bacterial signals and activate immune defenses. The findings indicate gut-adjacent fat may play a protective role, though researchers say more studies are needed to determine whether the results apply to people of normal weight.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
“One Battle After Another” and “Sinners” continued their dominant awards campaigns, as nominations were announced for the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards. One Battle After Another leads the pack with 14 nods, including Best Film, Director and Adapted Screenplay. The 14 nominations is the second-highest haul recorded by a film after “Gandhi”, which landed 16 in 1983. “The King’s Speech”, “All Quiet on the Western Front”, and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” also landed 14 noms. And Sinners landed 13, including Best Director and Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler. Michael B. Jordan landed his first BAFTA nod for Best Actor. The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards take place February 22.
With “The Late Show” set to end in May, Stephen Colbert will receive this year’s Walter Bernstein Award from the Writers Guild of America East. The honor will be bestowed on March 8 at the WGA Awards‘ East Coast ceremony in New York. The Bernstein Award, which was established in 2017, is presented to a member “who has demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity.” It is not an annual honor, and has only been awarded twice before, to Jelani Cobb and Ron Nyswaner.
Museum of the Moving Image will pay tribute to HBO‘s iconic mob drama “The Sopranos” with an exhibition and 3 special screenings featuring showrunner and series creator David Chase and cast members Steven Van Zandt, Dominic Chianese, Edie Falco, and Annabella Sciorra. “Stories and Sets for The Sopranos”, opening February 14 in the NYC Museum’s Amphitheater Gallery, will trace how the series’ narrative and visual worlds were established. Drawing from Chase’s personal archive, the exhibition features scripts, notes, and research that document the development of the series’ story arcs and character trajectories. It also examines the 4 sites where the series’ central action was set.

WEIRD NEWS
If you’ve ever wondered what fried chicken would taste like in candy form, KFC has officially answered the question — and you can now buy the result online. As announced in September, the fast-food giant has partnered with Frankford Candy to release KFC-branded jelly beans inspired by its most recognizable flavors. Each 4-ounce pack includes 3 varieties: fried chicken, sweet corn, and gravy. The product is now available for purchase through select online retailers, making it easier than ever to test your loyalty to the Colonel. Savory candy flavors aren’t new — companies like Jelly Belly use flavor chemistry to recreate unexpected tastes — but whether these beans are delicious or just daring remains up to adventurous snackers to decide.
